How do you build a habitat?
I am very confused on where I build the thing I have tried to build it over my main planets and just regular mining planets. I have no clue.

You can only build habitats on top of planets, moons, and gas giants.

If you select the habitat under the build mega-structure menu a visual indication will show up on all valid locations in the system, you could also right-click a location to build one there as well.

You cant on moons.

Thank you for quick responses but I am not seeing what you are saying, I click on my construction ship, megatructure then habitat and don't see any visual indications. What does it look like or am I supposed to be in planet view and not overhead view?

Here's a screen shot of what it should look like, and like Vovarush said it doesn't work on moons.

Edit: should work now

Weird yeah, I do not see that at all on any of my systems either. Not sure what to do.

If you try to build a habitat above a planet with a mining station on it try to demolish it first. It should always do that automatically but who knows.
Otherwise try to select your construction ship and right click a planet that should work and try to build it that way.

Or the other way around:

select the construction vessel
right-click a planet
if Habitat is grayed out it will tell you what's wrong

I wish I could build these over moons. I don't understand the physical limitation here. Unless it's just for balance?

balance and i think cause you could have too many habitats in 1 single system which would be busted af

Real moons suck where it comes to gravity. The dips and bumps in their local gravity fields are much larger than is the case with planets. An "orbit" about a moon is more like a roller coaster ride and does not end well.

Our own moon makes short work of orbiting stuff within a few weeks.

Sadly still nothing, I even deleted a mining station on a planet and it didn't pop up with anything, have no clue on how to fix this.

Dumb question, but do you actually have habitat technology already? You need to research that technology unless you started with the voidborn origin.
If the construction ship doesn't show you the option under building megastructures or when right-clicking a major planetary body (that'd be one that orbits the sun, no body that orbits another body like a gas giant or the like) in your systems doesn't show it, then your game might be busted and need to be reinstalled.
If you have the tech you should at least see the option of building a habitat.

I should have stated that I have the mod "Gigastructure and engineering" I looked that up and apparently it messes up habitats but its not for sure.

Ahhh. Yeah, with mods you never know, especially if you've got multiple that tinker with megastructures.
