Listening Post
Can anyone explain me what can the Listening Posts do ?
Is it worth to build ?
Should I build them on the frontier starbases of my empre ? I mean is it act like radars in our present days ?

And one side question, Are starbases reliable for defense ? I am now playing as a peaceful empire. My techs are one of the highest in galaxy but I can't expand my navy because of upkeeps ( Mining Network II tech still not appear :steamfacepalm: ) . Can I rely on Starbases for defence or Will I really need a very strong navy for crisis ?

Listening posts just extend your sensor range from the base they are built in. I think they can be useful on a station you have bordering another empire if you don't have anything better to put in that slot. I have one on a bastion station where an empire I have bad relations with is on the other side of a wormhole from that system.

For defense I think starbases should work, as long as you have FTL inhibitors. Otherwise the enemy fleets can bypass your starbases, unless they happen to pass close enough to start a fight anyway, then I don't think they can get past. I've been using starbases that way, but so far haven't really had a war to use them in.

Listening posts are deffo good for borders; but can't see into nebulas, so bear that in mind.

Make sure to replace them once you get the Sensor Array as they do nothing at that point and just waste energy and space.

i wish there was an easy way to see your sensor range :(

They give you more coverage outside of your own borders. It can be worth it for earlier warnings, but you can also get passive upgrades to Starbases that extend your range to at least 2 sectors out from their position.

early game starbases will easily provide defense if the enemy can't avoid it so if it's on a path between hyperlane points it should work. or if you have ftl inhibitors they'll have to face it.

later on you'll need a fleet to back it up but a station can provide quite a boost that allows smaller fleets to hold a chokepoint
