What really are the limits for Megastructures?
I do not understand the wiki on this. Is there a system limit on megastructures? It seems not. Is there a limit on how often I can build a megastructure?

I understand habtats and gates are different, but the (unique??) megastructures like dyson sphere or mega art installation confuse the heck out of me.

You're limited to constructing from scratch one of each of the unique ones: Dyson sphere, matter decompressor, sentry array, strategic coordination center, science nexus, mega-art installation, interstellar assembly and mega shipyard. You can get more than one of the unique ones by repairing a ruined one or capturing one that another empire has constructed. Ring worlds have no limits.

You are limited in how many of these megastructures you can build simultaneously, which can be expanded via an ascension perk, an ambition edict and being president of a specific high level federation. The base number is one, and each of those effects I listed increases it by one.

You cannot have more than one of these megastructures in a system.

OK. But apparently I CAN have more than one unique megastructure in one system, for example a coordination center and a sentry array in one system, both build by me all the way. That is what confuses me.

Some you can build yes, but for example you cant build more megas that uses /need star than one per system, even if u have 3 stars in one system.

And not 100% sure is 2 megas max per system anyways. But if i have guess, i say yes.

All of this is true.

Habitats are also a megastructure, don't require Megastructure Engineering, and have no limit / don't eat your megastructure build slot.
Habitats will block you from building some megastructures too, for example having a habitat in orbit of a black hole stops you from building a decompressor, you can't build a habitat in the Ring World Origin system, etc.
Just to add more complication, note that you can build a second copy of a megastructure if you happen to lose control of the first one. Then, if you later regain control of the first one somehow you will have two. You can also get more than one by capturing the one that someone else built.

In other words, the restriction is not that you can only build one, it is that you can't build one if you already control one. If you have a repeatable way to lose control of the one(s) you own then you can build an arbitrarily large quantity of them, and if you have a way to regain control of the ones you lost control of then you can end up in control of an arbitrarily large quantity of them.

This sounds like it is just waiting to be exploited.

Oh, absolutely. Right now you can build a (limited) megastructure as long as you don't control one at the time, which is possible to exploit in single-player and almost trivial to exploit in multiplayer (with collusion). I hope that eventually they will change it so that instead you can only build one per game. That will remove the exploit from single-player and limit the possible impact in multiplayer.

Yeah, what I mean by "these megastructures" are the multi-stage ones that I had listed in the first paragraph. Habitats are only limited by the number of celestial bodies in a system that they can be built in orbit of, and every system can have a gateway regardless of what else has been built there.

You can still build one if you have one that you restored from a ruined state. And I think you can build one if you control a captured one.

You are correct. To be absolutely precise, I should have said "if you already control one that you built." Sorry for any confusion.
