game randomly causes my computer to turn off.
hi. i recently picked up this game and really enjoy it but i'm having an issue where at random times my computer will just completely shut off. no blue screen at all. i've tried somethings i found on the internet
(most of which from this website https://www.drivereasy.com/knowledge/how-to-fix-stellaris-crash/) but haven't had any luck. specifically, i've tried running as administrator, updating my drivers, verifying the integrity, disabling fullscreen optimizations, checking the DEP, running on compatibility mode, and checking the temperature of my computer as i play stellaris (it runs at 50 F with no games and around 90 F with stellaris running which seems fine from what i found).

i'm going to try performing a clean reboot now so i might not respond for a few minutes but any help would be appreciated.

You should check your grafik gpu and prozessor temperature its not bound to a specific game that a pc shuts down if its too hot.

You shouldn't have enslaved toasters... Your computer noticed it... :lunar2019shockedpig:

More seriously, your computer may be dusty...

You sure it's measuring it in Fahrenheit? I've never seen a computer's temperature displayed in anything but Celsius, and that's in the US.

I seriously doubt that your computer is idling at 50 F, as that would mean your cooling system is using a refrigerant unless your air conditioning/heat is set absurdly low. And refrigerants are not used for cooling computers (at least not personal computers). So, assuming that your computer is actually running Stellaris at 90 C, yes, that's a problem. A CPU or GPU running frequently at a temperature that high will shorten its life, and that temperature is near the typical limit before it will shut down, meaning a temporary spike in temperature could cause your computer to shut down.

The program I used came in Celsius but I have no clue how to read that so I changed it in settings. Also, my computer might be running a bit cooler than normal because I live in a cramped room so my AC can only go in one spot and it bellows into my computer.

lol you're less than 20 degrees F from boiling your cpu

Try switching it back to Celsius and see what the program says your temperature is. Maybe your computer is actually running that cool, but that just seems abnormally cool to me, and your computer just shutting off like that is something that can happen when something overheats.

I suppose you could also look at the event viewer and see what, if anything, happened when your computer shut off.

I'll do that and update this when I get the chance.

Ok, so my computer runs around 20 c while idling. going to play some to check the highs now.

after running for a few hours, the min temperature was 15 c (idling) and 47 c (running stellaris).

Stellaris attempts to run at as high a framerate as it is allowed to, but there is no in-game setting to limit it.
(There appears to be a console command for it but it either doesn't work intuitively or not at all - and it leaches out into the session)
Check your graphics driver control software for setting a framerate cap.

Note, Stellaris' in-game clock is tied to framerate so setting a cap will noticeably slow down your games.
But it will generate a lot less heat.

Running the game on Borderless Fullscreen caps your frames to your monitors fps setting. So if you have set your monitor Hz to say 60 then Stellaris fps is capped to 60 aswell.

i hate playing on anything but fullscreen as i prefer to use my mouse to move around the map. i find it insufferable to move any other way >_<.

You can still use the mouse, middle mouse button moves the camera.

In that case the Refresh Rate graphics setting should double as an in-game frame cap.

Edit: It doesn't (unless V-Sync forces it to... doubtful and not testing that though).
510 fps in the "pondering what to play next" menu, 260 fps in a fresh game.
Fast and responsive when it's up there, but that excess is the reason I limit it.

the game has been running for about 8 hours straight so it MIGHT be fixed. i had to take my computer in yesterday shortly after starting this thread (big coincidence right? ...) cause my OS had a bootup file get corrupted. maybe that fixed my issue and the game was conflicting with some core OS files?
