I usually play with xenophilic or neutral empires so I keep them open until our borders touch and I sense they will encroach into my space.
Isolasionist is more of a playstyle then ethic's.
Sorry for the confusion.
But: Closed Border raise the border tensions with your neighbors. Sometimes, if you are boxed in and have the feeling the others could gang up on you or just beat you on their own, it helps to have Open Borders with them from the start. The more time you could buy thanks to open borders, the better it could be for you. Depending on the actual situation, your own Empires civics and what Neighbors you have, of course. Can't please a neighbor Purifier and will not really help your own trustgrowth with the xenophilses if you are a devouring swarm.
Also if you close borders, the AI does the same to you.
Which causes your science ships to be much less effective in exploring the galaxy in the early game and losing out on ALOT of potenctial anomalies
I don't wanna use exploits like that...
