"Found signs of precursor activity"

So I got my 'main quest' to figure out some ancient group, and I got 4/6 artifacts then just stopped finding them. I've been burning and pillaging my way across the galaxy surveying things as I capture them, and I've just stopped at 4/6. However several times now I've surveyed planets and it has said I found 'traces of precursor activity" which is highlighted in GRAY, not the normal bright color. (if any) I don't get anything in my situation log, I get no research projects I can do from orbit. I see nothing on the planet and no options to do anything.

What is this? Is it artifacts for my main quest? How do I ge them? Why have I stopped otherwise finding them? Thanks! (If it helps I'm doing the Yuht line)

The AI can find the anomalies and complete them too. You're probably finding the ones they've completed. There are random events that can trigger and lead to more artifacts being found, but they are EXCEEDINGLY rare. In short, you've got 100+ years to wait to complete it unless you're lucky.

Ah gotcha, so it's like an exhausted site. Well I own 75% of the galaxy now, so I'll be able to fully explore it soon enough, unless the crisis cuts me off, haha. Thanks for the info!
