my screenshots have a lot of my empires. they've been edited a bit since then to account for game changes that came with megacorp and newer dlc but they're all close to the same still

I created a lot as part of a project to create an empire for every AI personality a while ago. My favorites:
--Barbaric Despoiler lizards with enslaved lost colony style humans as a "syncretic" species. Their religion holds that the winner of any conflict was the righteous one. Militarist, Authoritarian, Spiritualist.
--Humans, after a long-ago alien attack turned Earth into a tomb world. They're vengeful Fanatic Purifiers.
--Klingon-like cats (Cathrathi). Oligarchic, Warrior Culture, Distinguished Admiralty, Egalitarian, Fan. Militarist.
--A Pacifist, Xenophile megacorp with Criminal Heritage. Rule of Acquisition #48: the bigger the smile, the sharper the knife.
--Fanatic Purifier space elves with Environmentalist. You're stepping on their grass. If you really hate yourself, make them Life Seeded.
--Union of Soviet Socialist Stars

For me, it's all about the pops, and I'm not attracted to passivism.

Imperial (and my personal favourite, dictatorial (if you feel it'll be better for you in terms of game-mechanics (leader traits/civics is nice))) habitat-station dwelling (I always forget the name) origin, xenophobes with conformist/social science naturals and focus towards black sites and other ways to control ethic divergence is fun to play. Basically have a master race, and then bring in other species to be surface-dwelling slave races.
You can do this and actually have pretty good external relations with some.
Making stronghold building-focused habitat stations alongside your mega-defense stations at key defensive points can give you very strong borders.

Going the other route and being a kind of egalitarian/xenophile militarist and bringing planets into your fold, then giving the people freedom (and loooooove) is also fun.

Edit: put "ethnic" instead of "ethic"; something I always scoff at internally when others do it :P
