Whats the point in Destroyers?
I've just realised that 1 Corvette costs 80 Alloys but one Destroyer costs over 200, while being less than half as powerful.

I still have the naval capacity, why should I build bigger ships if corvettes are more bang for my buck?

I find the opposite to be true. Destroyers can fit more roles than corvette , having access to a wider range of combat computer ranges + weapon variety. I think the only weapon slot the destroyer doesn't have access to, that corvettes do, are missiles.

Why do you believe they are only half as powerful?

I no longre do. My 40 Corvette fleet just got wiped by a few cruisers and a battleship, despite their 'power' numbers both being about equal, but as the Corvettes died that number plumetted while theirs stayed high.

Their now genociding my people

A destroyer is more than half as powerful as a corvette. The problem with them is that they are also not two-and-a-half times as powerful as a corvette, which is where they'd need to be in order to be cost effective. Destroyers have a role in the game, which is when your enemies do not have cruisers and you don't have cruisers either. In that window, they are good in either an anti-corvette role or an anti-destroyer role (supplementing a fleet of mostly corvettes). Once larger ships are available their usefulness fades, whereas the high evasion of corvettes may potentially keep them viable longer.

It sounds like you are fighting against a superior opponent

- Take a peak at the weapons + ratio of shields to armor they use with the magnifying glass icon next to their fleet, when you click it.

- Compare and see what weapons would work best. Railguns = better against shields, lasers = better against armor. AI likes to use PD heavy fleets at the start, so you have the advantage of + 1 full damage weapon slot on their corvette fleets.

- Design new and higher tier ships to intermix with your fleets. Adjust your fleets accordingly. Regroup and Repair. Hopefully you have a chokepoint set up for this.

- Stack special resource edicts for armor, weapons damage, sensor, shield, and speed boosts, If you have ancient artifacts, reverse engineering minor artifacts for a combat advantage would be useful.

-Convert some clerk jobs to soldier jobs and help create chokehold stronghold points to prevent easy land army capture + creates more naval capacity for your fleets

- Focusing on more military techs, and sending in the occasional science ship to sloop away some debris tech, can also help swing the tide.

If you feel you are getting too overwhelmed by the war; trying to force a semi-favorable status quo war end may be advantageous to outright slow and progressively grinding defeat.

Consider lowering the difficulty in following games, until you get a better hang on more game mechanics

corvettes die in 1 hit generally, while destroyers take about 4 hits before they die. I use them in the role corvettes usually take in my fleets.

Destroyers fit into the role of reliability, though damage or utility wise they are weaker, you can bet in low-mid tech fights that some will be alive at the end of the battle, where as corvetts are wet paper vs anything with good tracking and accuracy, or just enigmatic decoder, god forbid you fight anything with both.

destroyers have twice the shields and armor and can mount medium and large weapons which will blitz your limited shields and armor far more quickly than you can destroy theirs. One other thing to remember Defense platforms don't count against your fleet totals and swap minerals for alloy to the extent you can.

Not sure where you see them as less than half as powerful, destroyers tend to be considerably more powerful as they have more than twice as much firepower and health. They lack a bit in evasion but also outrange corvettes through the use of a couple medium weapons. Large weapons are also possible at this stage to outrange some station guns for artillery style destroyers but their hit rate will be low early game against corvettes.
