Can't upgrade ships
Hello,
When I get new technology, I go into f9 and update the ship, give it a new name, and delete the old ship.
However, after doing so, I have some ships (exactly the same ships) that are allowed to upgrade, and some ships where the upgrade button is greyed out, as though it can't be upgraded.
What gives? Is this just a really, really ♥♥♥♥♥♥ bug? Is there any workaround? As it stands, if I want my battleships to have jump drives, i have to scrap them and build them afresh, which takes a LOT more time and alloy than it should. Especially when one of my fleet's battlecruisers upgraded like nothing was weird about it.

But an easy fix for that, is to go into the fleet manager and retrofit those corvettes to the new design, that should make them upgrade-able.

Then you are not upgrading an existing design - you are making a new one. An upgrade to an existing design means you do not give it a new name and DO NOT delete it.

Regardless, you can still upgrade your ships in the fleet manager... change the ship to the new ship design. As long as it is the same class (i.e. you can only upgrade corvettes to corvettes and not to destroyers or cruisers).

You do not have enough materials to do the upgrade is why. You need to build more alloy plants.

If you are making a new design then retrofit the old ships into the new design before you delete the old one. The game sometimes gets a bit weird if you delete ship designs that are still in use.

Should be noted that you can stick with the same name and just update the ship design rather then making a new design with a new name. You can also have it on "auto update" allowing it to replace components in the design with more advanced versions automatically (But this can also sometimes get a bit weird when it comes to late game components that uses advanced resources, not swapping stuff out to the more advanced components).

@BoydofZINJ and @Garatgh Deloi: Right, but when I don't rename it, I can't tell when it stops being willing to upgrade. I've run into that problem before, where I just don't rename it, but when it stops upgrading I can't tell unless I inspect the ship manually. Also, if I don't delete the old design, then sometimes the ships are not willing to upgrade, but are willing to upgrade after I've deleted it.

@markdb92: That's not what happens when you don't have enough materials to upgrade. When you don't have enough, you can still issue the upgrade command, and the ship just hangs out around the shipyard until you have enough materials.

When all your ships are upgraded - upgrade button is grey. Easy :)

@corisai the problem is that they are NOT upgraded. But the upgrade button is still greyed out. For example, some of the ships have shield 2s when the rest have shield 4s. And I only have a single ship design of that weight class.

Try to hover your mouse over upgrade button : you will see tooltip with cost of uprgade. I'm almost sure that you're lacking special resources to do it.

@corisai, again, that's not how lack of resources works for upgrading. They will hover over the shipyard until you get enough resources to upgrade.

Besides that, I had about 30k alloy at the time, more than enough.

:steamfacepalm:

For example upgrade from T2 shields to T4 shields - cost not only alloys but also EXOTIC GASES.
Are you sure that have enough RARE resources?

Another question - are you using any mods?

Recently I had no issues to upgrade AI ships that I'd received after integrating two empires - both fleets were upgraded in two-stages: first to my own designs instead of AI one and second time to my latest designts.

Okay let's try this again.
1) Made new ship, corvette, "no_dark_matter". Gave it some low level components.
2) Built 20 of them.
3) From that design, made new ship. DID NOT HIT 'New Design' BUTTON. Named it "yes_dark_matter". Added better components.
4) 20 ships refuse to upgrade.
5) deleted "no_dark_matter" design.
6) 20 ships refuse to upgrade.
7) Modified "yes_dark_matter" and saved it under the same name.
8) 20 ships refuse to upgrade.

I have 55k alloy and 3k dark matter. It's not an issue of insufficient resources.

Oh - this is source of issue!
You need to open fleet manager and force upgrade via it by changing corvettes design.

Only in case if you have one design then delete it & create new design - all ships of that class would be upgraded to it automatically.

If you have multiple designs with different names you should pick correct one to upgrade via fleet manager.

@corisai This time around I didn't rename the ship, and it did offer to upgrade them. But I've had problems with that in the past, without renaming, where I have some ships that upgrade and some that don't. So I don't notice until way later because, well, they're all the same name.

Elitewrecker PT May 3, 2020 @ 11:55am
It doens't matter if you didn't hit "New design", the moment you give it a different name it IS a new design.

@EliteWrecker PT
okay sure, but it should never work or it should always work. I've had games where I rename every iteration and it usually upgrades after I delete the old one.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.
