The game becomes deadly slow after 2400
Im playing on a pc with i9 9900x with RTX 2080 Titan therefore i assume its definitly not a hardware issue. but the game slows down sooooo much its crazy. Is this a known issue? Is there a way to fix it?

Yeah its an old issue, If you want to "fix" it take a collossus and remove a few empire, the pops tend to lag the entire game when there are too many or too much diversity

There is a current bug were factions are calculated on a daily basis, a patch for that is currently being tested in the beta branch and from what little I've heard seems to be working. So hopefully it'll get released soon.

Dont worry. I have exact same specs, i9 9900k and RTX 2080Ti 32GB RAM and game stil slows down heavily towards endgame. Its a software limitation with their old outdated/inneficient game engine and population of aliens in the galaxy.

If you play on a large galaxy, decrease the amount of habitable worlds. Hopefully it gets better after the update @Fenris mentioned.

I haven't seen a date but I havent really looked. I think the announcement was on the 15th though. If you want you can opt into the beta branch and try it out, but I dont know if that will work with a game already in progress or not.
the beta will work with a save game and it does wonders. I newly upgraded my computer to an i7-9700 and GTX 1660 Ti and the game runs amazing in super late 2300.

This has happened once or twice before with Stellaris, they ♥♥♥♥ around with the code and how stuff is calculated which leads to these types of situations. Hopeflly a patch comes soon.

Working entirely as designed. It's a sandbox game - It slows down. Yes even on a 9900K. This is how it is.

Reduce the number of stars to get faster passing of months as more stuff appears in the game. Can it be optimized and reduced to some extent? Definitely. Is this being done on a continued basis? Yes. Will it ever be "fixed"? Not until Stellaris is long since replaced by sequels or competting products.

It's not working as intended though or they wouldn't have fixed it when it has happened previously.

Also, and yes I know this is going to sound stupid and make no sense that I can think of, have you tried removing Steam overlay? About a year ago I was running into massive lag around the 2400 mark. I googled and tried a dozen things then came across a post saying to remove Steam overlay. I thought it was complete BS but tried anyway ..... and it worked. Well mostly worked, instead of 10 seconds per day on fastest speed it dropped to about 1 second per day. This was a year or so ago so it's possible Steam fixed whatever the problem was and I'm 90% certain it is the faction bug anyway.

I just spotted this and saw it is a recent post which confused me - that's not hard to do ;o) - isn't the patch that they have just released suppose to sort out these "performance" issues? I don't actually know about it as I am new to the game, and I have only just finished the initial phase I have with all Paradox games - about 50 hours in-game before starting up a new game proper. And that isn't a complaint, it's a compliment...!! :o) :o)

There was a problem with pops switching jobs on a daily basis that they fixed. This one is pops switching factions on a daily basis. They have a patch being tested on the beta branch that people in threads have said works. So hopefully we'll get it soon.

They released an update that greatly improved things, then immediately released another that slowed everything down again. Then they released a beta update which I'm using now. It works great. I can play a 1,000 star galaxy with over 10k pops. It still slows down a bit, but by that point in the game there's so much going on I wouldn't be using the fastest setting anyway. My computer has decent specs, but it's not top of the line or anything, so the update should work great on faster computers.

This is literally how this genre works - The only alternative would be to hard lock everyone to small galaxies and then people would complain they didn't have the freedom to play whatever their hardware could handle...
