I'm a newbie and don't want to ruin my experience (is it possible?) by don't knowing some game's aspects
When you want to "reload" an ironman game from one of your previous saves, exit to menu and delete the saved game folder from your "My Documents\Paradox Interactive\Stellaris\save games" folder. (Make sure you are deleting the correct one.) Then copy the "saved" copy of that folder back which you want to load back into that location. When you load the game you'll be back at the point where you made that "saved" copy originally.
Ironman mode is selected during game creation, so in future games you can turn the option off and you will be able to save and load those games normally.
The file name does not cause ironman mode, its ironman mode that causes the specific save file.
If no what the sense of ironman + no-achivements-friendly mods and what the sense of not giving user a possibility to turn this thing off when achivements is already turned off?
(Correction: Actually it may save periodically; I just remembered I have autosaves turned off.)
You won't be able to convince ironman to work differently than it does, even if the way that it works does not make sense to you. Start a non-ironman game if you don't want to be limited by the restrictions of ironman.
Ow, thanks for this information, now I will no fear lost a bit of progress when exiting the game
