Is the base game enough for a beginner?
I am thinking of getting this game.

Having almost zero knowledge on this game and it's genre, would buying the base game only be enough for a complete beginner who is trying to get into the genre or should I buy certain DLCs?

Thank you.

The base vanilla version of the game is good enough to learn the basic mechanics of the game. I started with no DLC on the console (Xbox One) and then got DLCs as they became available. I then switched to PC because there are more DLCs available and mod support. Try it out and if you like it, you can purchase the DLCs.

Sign up on the Paradox website too as normally they have sales. You will get an email when a sale is on, so all good.

If you are new, especially to the genre, I recommend starting w/o dlc, as the amount of content they add could be overwhelming. When you feel comfortable with the mechanics and like the game you can chose which dlc supplements your game experience best

Thank you all for your suggestions! Much appreciated.

I'll give the base game a shot :D

stellaris is "easy" game with easy to learn mechanics.

sadly, there is nothing to "master" and ever grand admiral is trivial.

random component is significant, you may get lucky and steamroll entire galaxy by 2300 or get boxed with genodical empires and have really boring tower defence gameplay.

I would suggest you going to microsoft store. https://www.xbox.com/en-GB/xbox-game-pass/pc-games

First month is 1£ then 4.

And you get all Stellaris content, all DLCs including Federations.

The only downside is that you cant use Steam Workshop for modding. but as you said, you are new so you dont really need those mods. and if you like the game then you can buy it on steam on a sale or something.

Well, it's my first time trying this but I do like to think that other people's ease could be other people's difficulty.

Oh wow I've never heard about this before! Thanks for letting me know.

Yeah, the steam workshop exclusion is quite a bummer for me :(

Base game is enough, and its fun. I played the base game for a long time before I got the DLC on sale.

you dont get all the DLCs just the base game from Game Pass. you have to buy the DLCs each seperately... or can get the starter pack.. or the ascension pack.

I can recommend starting to get into the game without any DLCs but if you enjoy the base game and played enough, I would at least get Utopia, while the other DLCs add some neat stuff, Utopia is pretty essential for the full single player experience. In multiplayer you can benefit from the DLCs the host has but yes for single player purposes I would at least consider Utopia if you like Stellaris:)

+1
Utopia gives the three unique game-play and very powerful mechanics in ascension paths.
