Dimensional Portal as Machine Empire...

I just got the Dimension of Suffering event in the dimensional portal chain but I'm a determined exterminator machine empire so shouldn't be able to get psionics. What happens if I close the portal? Am I not even supposed to get this option? I looked online and didn't find any answers.

Anyone can get any of the other dimensions on the other side of their portal. In your situation you miss out on a nice reward, but there are still benefits to closing the portal (or leaving it open). Sometimes in Stellaris you just won't be in a position to get the maximum benefit from some event that occurs; that's just part of the game.

Only spiritualists get psionic techs from the dimension of suffering, everyone else either gets a generator tech or a mining tech. However, closing it costs you the dimensional portal researcher jobs, so I don't think it's worth it even as a spiritualist. https://stellaris.paradoxwikis.com/The_Doorway
