Dyson Sphere bug/feature
Hi folks, posting this because it took me ages to figure out and I eventually gave up and looked at the wiki. If you're struggling to build a dyson sphere anywhere because the game keeps telling you "no that's not a star" when it very definitely is, its because you have to manually destroy all stations in the system first before the game will let you build it.

Rather than.. Y'know... Just removing them when you try to use the sphere, or giving that as the warning in the tooltip rather than the big glowy thing not being a star. #rant

Well, that isnt right. You used to be able to keep everything. Perhaps just a mining station on the star at worst.
Weirdly though you can rebuild everything in the system afterwards, you just need to delete it all first for the game to see the star as a viable candidate.

It should only be the star's station.

Also, at one point you couldn't build a Dyson sphere around a red dwarf, but I haven't ran into it for a long time. I don't know if that's still a thing...

Oh sure if you're mining power from it sure you'd expect to need to get rid of the station first, but that's the point of the post. You have to remove every station in the whole system for the star to become available :P

I literally built a Dyson sphere yesterday in a system with multiple mining stations, and I only had to disband the energy station orbiting the star. Sounds like you've found a bug/mod conflict or something.
Probably a DLC problem, I have some but not all of them (I don't have Federations/Apocalypse/Relics) but was running the game without any mods. I'll just chalk it up to weirdness and move on. Didn't get to finish it anyway, the Contingency exterminated my civ. :(

If the last station you delete is the one around the star, then you'll have to delete them all.

If you delete the one around the star first, then it is at least intended that you will not have to delete any of the others. This is how it works in 2.6.2 and previous versions, anyway. I have not tried it in 2.6.3_beta yet. If you are having to delete them all in that version, then it is a bug.

yo I have a similar problem, I just upgraded my dyson sphere to a constellaton dyson sphere and before that the game said to me that I was harvestig it's power (shown by the number of the dyson sphere in green) but now, somehow the numbers are back to white meaning that it is not being eploited and when I try to build a mining ship to get it's power the game tells me I already have one, which should be true but there is no sign of any ships around the dyson sphere except of course my building ship.
anyone has an idea on what went wrong or If I mess up something ?

ok so with the new dlc you need to upgrade a dyson swarm to a dyson sphere. you cant just build the sphere anymore. i think that is what is happening for you

this thread is 4 years old. with 4 years of updates and bugfixes and bug creation, whatever issue OP had is irrelevant now.
