Unable to limit FPS (only Stellaris)
As the subject implies, Stellaris runs at max frames no matter what settings I put in place.
Windowed- 300fps
Full Screen- 600fps
- I've loaded several other games and they all run at 60fps and/or whatever I set it to.
- Switched from the test channel to no channel to 2.2.6
- Verified files several times
- Deleted "Settings" file
- "Clear User Directory" several times
- Disabled all mods

I'd like to avoid uninstalling/reinstalling the game and/or my video card drivers so figured I'd ask here first.

Anyone having/had similar issues?

"My game runs too well!" we've reached peak first world problems.

You have 600 frames after starting a new game?
falkon311 2019 年 4 月 8 日 上午 6:49
Yep, 600fps on the title screen and ~350 once I start a game.

The issue is that my video card (Vega 64) is running so hard that I can hear the capacitors whining... through my speakers. Definitely not healthy.

Every other game I've tried runs just fine. Steam games, non-Steam games, doesn't matter.

Bah, guess it's time to uninstall/reinstall stuff.

Doesn't the card come with some sort of optimization software (like NVidia does). If so , can you go in there and see if there is something you can do?

Tried all of that too. Forcing VSync, Frame rate limiter on, game specific settings... nothing seems to work.

This is still an issue today and I get the whine through my speakers too as the game runs at over 300 fps at 4k resolution.

There is apparently a way to apply a framerate cap through the console, I found a console command for it by googling. But console is automatically disabled in ironman mode and I play ironman in order to get achievements.

Running more frames than what your monitor can display just wastes a lot of power as the GPU is taxed beyond what is necessary. Makes it hotter too and you gain absolutely nothing as these extra frames are not shown on the screen. Over time, this reduces the lifespan of your GPU which is not so nice when you might have paid over 1000 dollars for it.

Can confirm and no solution works. Really annoying.

man i wasn't expecting to get a reply 2 years after making a comment that was 70% joke but i don't mind. It sure sounds like a problem though i personally could never afford a gpu even half that price despite living in the first world so i really can't sympathize.

I paid 1200€ for my current GPU and earned the money for it by doing yard chores(cutting grass, plowing snow, blowing leaves) for some cash for about a year. I live in the first world too and making money on the side for projects like these is pretty easy and doesn't require any college degrees. I'm already saving for my next PC the same way.

Download MSI AfterBurner which will install RivaTuner (can uninstall AB afterward if you want). RT's frame limiter works for both ATI and Nvidia cards.

I found out I can cap the FPS by using Radeon Chill for the game from the AMD Adrenalin software. It's supposed to be a power saving feature for when the player is idle, so I didn't actually look more closer to what it does. It simply sets a minimum and maximum FPS cap and these then work all of the time in the game, not just when the user is idle. :steamfacepalm:

Open a non-ironman game, type "tweakergui maxfps [fps cap]" exactly like that (without quotes) into the console. It'll open up a small menu where you can input a fps cap. Judging by the steam fps display, the actual fps usually ends up around 1.5 times whatever your input is. You can go to the menu and start an ironman game and it'll keep the fps cap, but in my experience it resets every time you close Stellaris.

Holy hell, this actually works. Thank you so much.

They've also fixed the issue with radeon chill not working, so I've been using that for now again.
