How to take ownership of planets and starbases?
Hi,
I am new to this game and yet havent found out what to do with enemy territory I wanna take over.
I envaded one solar system and occupied the starbase. Yet I cannot upgrade it cause its just "occupied".
How do I take ownership or take over planets?

Ownership shifts at the end of the war. If you have certain faction types, you may be able to just take the systems flat out, but usually, you have to claim them. Claims cost influence.

How much influence do you need for it? And is it time-based or a one time action?
I spend 500 influence on the solar system I occupied but nothing seems to change.

You generally only need to place one claim. More only matters if you're in a war with allies on your side that also have claims.

Once you make the claim, you don't need to re-do it. It's permanent.

As for "nothing seems to change", remember that the change only happens when the war is over, and only if you have claims and either flat-out win the war, or settle status quo.

Take a look at this page for more info on the war types:

https://stellaris.paradoxwikis.com/Warfare

500 influence is a lot for a claim. Are you rivals with the faction you're making claims against? It lowers the cost. But once you make a claim, you set that as a war goal. Once you win the war (if you do), you are granted that claim.

That it only takes effect once the war is over is (in my oppinion) stupid.
If you want to use the terretories as you occupy them, you'll have to end and start the war again and again, and the waste of influence is just dumb.

We fight
I beat you
This is mine now

That's how simple it should be.

You really should stop necroing posts. Make a new thread instead.

But since you bring it up - if you want that mechanic, play as a Total War empire. You'll suffer the consequences to go along with the benefits, but it sounds closer to what you want.

The purpose of the claim system is to prevent empires from being able to do exactly what you're asking for without any sort of penalty.

i must say its annoying only being able to capture 3-5 systems every 10 years.

I would suggest you should just not bother.

Use the first war as a way of getting the systems you want for border-protection, but more importantly, to cripple their fleets.

Then, in the next war, make them tributaries instead.

It's far easier to defend your borders when you don't have to worry about neighbouring the enemy, since you have a protective shield around you that is feeding you money.

Generally, I'll only claim and capture a handful of systems, and only in the cases where my initial expansion wasn't fast enough to get the ideal border territories to establish my choke points.

But again - if your goal is to expand aggressively and claim systems, you have avenues available - playing as a Total War empire is the simplest, but see https://stellaris.paradoxwikis.com/Warfare#Claims for the others.

You can capture as many systems as you claim beforehand.

I was about to ask the same question and yes, althought I really enjoyed Stellaris, I'm in agreement also, we conquer, you lose now what's yours is mine at least in the sector I fought. I understand Devs decision, however at least could give players this option I guess. Having to return back or owning it only after war is over...... is strange.

Then go total war. Problem solved.

My Goodness, you people are so defensive when someone makes a simple comment or have an different opinion from yours. Chill

So, an npc faction defeats my fleet and then takes over my habitat almost instantly. But I have to claim and then wait until "the war is over" to get the planet or habitat back?
