Known issue and tend to start happening between 2300-2400. I bet with all these new data introduced in 2.2 the engine can no longer handle it well.

Autosave seems to be crashing less than manual. Loading save while in game can also crash.

One fix is to add -opengl at startup args. If you get red dots/lines after opengl turn off anisotropic filtering at GPU control.

Meanwhile I got more save crashes in 2.2.5 than 2.2.4 when 2.2.5 is supposed to fix it. ♥♥♥♥ PDX.

Yup happened to me at around 2370 on one of my main games.. can't play it anymore due to not being able to save progress manually or via autosave..

As BenBlu above mentions, you can add the -opengl option for the steam launch options and that may help for awhile (it did for me for 70 years), but then the problem returned again.

PDX need to fix it permanently.:steamsad:

Mine failed to go past 2326.07.01 with 2.2.4 + opengl, now it made it past with 2.2.3 for who knows how long lmao.

yea best solution so far is to turn on autosave to monthly. Still crashes every 10 minutes or so however
Try clear the cache file for Stellaris it might work or verify your Stellaris files.

Take a look at my guide if you also experience lag/stuttering it might help: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1644522708 :lunar2019piginablanket:

Thanks much! This startup argument seems to have solved my crashing on save issue. It appears to be causing a few minor visual glitches, but that's way more tolerable than periodic crashes on auto-saves.

It took a while to find something that worked. Thank you for posting!

Mine is a mod issue, I'll copy paste from a discussion I posted:

I think there is a mod incompatibility issue, the save always crashes (during autosaving or manual saving, stutters, then hard CTDs) on 7-01-2431 with Dyanmic Political Events (2.2) and Plentiful Traditions (2.2.7) activated at the same time. When running separately (along with alllll my other mods), the game works fine, but when they are running together, they crash.

No idea how to fix this, and both mods are kind of critical for my save, and I really don't feel like starting YET ANOTHER save.

I've got exactly the same problem. Except I've been using "-opengl" from the start of this game because I've had this issue in the past on at least 3 different playthroughs with a different set of mods in each game across versions 2.2.5, 2.2.6, and now 2.2.7.

It seems like every time you get upwards of 2300-2400 the game just won't save anymore, manual or auto-save.

I guess if playing with absolutely no mods, maybe it would save?? But if this is a problem with using ANY mods, that seems like something PDX should figure out why it's happening. :steamsad:

I'm at the point where I literally don't want to play this game now because I know I'll hit the magical no-saving point and waste dozens of hours of my life getting there.

I tried using the -opengl. It worked for a couple hours before i had to go. When i tried launching stellaris again with -opengl, the launcher was non-responsive. Only after removing the opengl does the launcher actually work.

I'm getting the same issue, which pisses me off because I have a really good setup. I guess we'll have to wait 'till 2.2.6 or something and hope there's a fix. Ah well, back to Surviving Mars - gotta try out that new DLC.

Same issues here, been playing a MP game with a buddy, he can't even load into the game at all anymore. It's super frustrating, Stellaris has been so unstable since 2.2 it seems

This is the second time it's happened to me since the latest patch, -opengl launch command will only solve it for a few hours. Its super frustrating because I play my campaigns on the longest time setting and on the hardest difficulty. All that time and effort for nothing. Stellaris is a mess.

@Seventh_Sighn "All that time and effort for nothing. Stellaris is a mess." That's exactly how I felt.

I didn't even buy the Distant Stars DLC when it was like 60% off last week because I thought, wow... I'm going to get really into this and NOT be able to save like the last 3 playthroughs... not gonna buy THAT then.

Hopefully they'll fix this. Then maybe I'll come back to the game.

are you guys running with mods or just plain old vanilla?

A little update, somebody online like 2 years ago suggested going back and loading from old auto-saves on the same playthrough and going up to where it was crashing. That perhaps making different choices would avoid whatever caused the save CTD.

So I did that, going back 2, 3, and even 4 auto-saves and sure enough it crashed on every save on the same date it had been crashing before.

Something about the way game files get saved, it makes something CTD if you get whatever bug/glitch/combination and then your game will never save again past a certain date.

It doesn't seem to matter if you load previous saves and make different choices. If you hit that save CTD wall, just give up that playthrough. It's done.
