Research Agreement with species with inferior tech?
Hello all.
I have been offered a Research Agreement by a friendly species I have just encountered.
Their tech and economy are inferior to mine so I would probably gain very little.
As they are on my boarder I also worry that there maybe future conflict.
I would prefer to stay on good terms if possible.
Is there a way to see what tech they have?
Will there be a negative impact if I decline?

There's no negative impact for declining the offer. There is a positive impact for making a favorable deal, so diplomatically it might still be worthwhile even though there might not be much of a technological advantage for you. You can cancel the deal later, after your relationship is securely positive. I think that there is a penalty for cancelling the deal (not sure in the latest version), but even so it shouldn't be so large as to jeopardize an otherwise stable positive relationship.

You can't really see what techs they have, but you could poke around and observe some of that directly. For example, examining their ships and planets might tell you where they stand, roughly, in terms of the techs that leave visible artifacts, such as ship weapons or planetary buildings. Other techs like leader lifespan will be harder or impossible to confirm.

Many thanks. I think I should decline. I have a non aggression and trade pact with them so hopefully all should be ok :)
