How do I increase Administrative Capacity?
Hello all.
How do I increase Administrative Capacity?
I currently own 4 systems and am in the process of colonizing my first planet.
I don't have a large fleet, just 8 corvets.
My Empire sprawl is already 21 and I have an admin cap of 30.
I have had a look through my buildings and other menus but can't find anything that says it will increase my admin cap.

Civics, an expansion tradition, and tech.

If I remember right you're relatively new, yeah? A tip, you don't need to stress out about going over admin cap. If an increase is convenient or along the way to other plans then go for it! Otherwise, the more important thing to consider is are you keeping a steady flow of science and unity? Don't neglect buildings that provide unity and keep those labs coming.

You get no benefits from staying under the cap so it's actually a bit better to go over it as backwards as that sounds. You'll benefit more from going over the cap than from staying under it as the resources you gain from expanding/claiming systems normally overtakes the maintenance/cost penalties to your empire. That being said you can increase it through an Ascension perk, Government civics, Repeatable Society Research (super late game) and the expansion tradition tree.

some techs give you more, i wouldnt worry about the admin cap until like late game.

There is a repeatable tech to increase it infinitely ^^

Many thanks.
Now I see it in Traditions, Expansion, Courier network.
Increase by 20.
I have unlocked To Boldly Go and Science Division in discovery and have enough points to get me started in Expansion then Courier Network on the next unlock.
Yes, I'm new to the game, having a great time learning the ropes :)
I'm taking it slow, literally as on the slowest game speed. I Am also being very careful not to overextend myself, once the new planet is colonized ill slowly build it up.
Will then keep exploring as much as I can.

Many thanks chaps :)
How do I calculate how much empire sprawl will increase once my new planet is colonised?

Empire Sprawl increases by 1 point per district, and 2 points per planet, system or branch office. So claiming a system, colonizing a size 16 planet and constructing all districts will increase your Admin Cap usage by 20 points.

That said, the intention is that you are going to go over your administrative cap at some point: all it does is increase your technology, tradition and leader costs proportional to your empire's size.

The planet is size 26 I believe. So im going to be over by about 20. That is unless I start down the Expansion tradition.
So 20 over, how does that manifest itself in terms of a penalty?

+0.3% Tech cost
+0.5% Tradition adoption cost
+1% Campaign (Certain sorts of Edicts) cost
+1% Leader Upkeep cost
+1% Leader Cost

Per point over I believe.
There's a research option to increase admin capacity though it's quite expensive and small potatoes. I found it easier to stop expanding after a while, then declare total war once two thirds of the galaxy form a federation and then systematically destroy all planets and wipe out all life in the rest of the galaxy. I also found with things like unemployment a genocide tends to work quite well also.

I was hoping to befriend as many lifeforms as I can and avoid conflict :)

certain playstyles ignore the cap altogether.
