Is it worth playing currently pre expansion?
Utopia, Megacorp, Synthetic Dawn, Apocalypse and I guess Federations will be too.
Optional but do add things:
Distant Stars, Ancient Relics, Leviathans story packs.
Plantoids, Humonoids and Lithoids race packs.

The new Federations DLC on the side, might also be a gamechanger for people who like federations in teh first place.

So even if you can have a lot of fun in the current game state, *maybe* the upcoming patch will make it even better. of course keep in mind that the patch will break all mods when it goes live and depending on how fast the modders adapt, that might be weeks or a month without at least some mods. Obligatory Paradox bugs and screw ups requiring hotfixes are expected as usual on top of that ;) So depending on how well you can get along with the vanilla game in whatever state it will end up, you could also just plan ahead to revisit Stellaris in like 5 weeks and see then how things play out.
I agree with this, but give it a few days for a trusted, unbiased reviewer to give it a review.
In terrm of space 4x, I think Stellaris is pretty hard to beat, but currently a lot of individuals experiences late game issues under certain conditions, but a patch is coming to help to that effect. If you like other Paradox games, you will most likely like this one.
Another alternative would be to wait for a special (it often goes for like 10$) and then find someone who has all the DLC (since host shares the DLC) and you can try it and see for yourself and refund if needed.
Still having fun
Now over 1000 hours.
Do you have all the DLCs?
I am still not sure about the DLC itself despite some blant OP origins being OP.
