Is playing a democracy a good idea?
I#m new in stellaris and wanted to create an empire with democratic roleplay.

But is the disadvantege of loosing a scientist in elections that huge that democracies are completely unplayable in multiplayer sessions? Or are there even more disadvanteges of playing a democracy?

No. From a pure efficiency point of view, Democracy is probably the worst by far. Every 10 years you potentially lose access to one your best leaders. You don't have access to agendas and it gives you egalitarian attraction (which I personally hate).

That being said I constantly play Democracies and Empires just for the sake of roleplaying.

Otherwise playing dictatorial or oligarchy will be better in every way.

I'm new too and my first real playthrough is currently a democracy. Its working great! So far I have a superior economy and military power than any other species in the galaxy. Tension is rising though so I fear war will break out soon. Glad I've got a few allies.

I have found mandates to be a pretty nice bonus if your leader can complete them on time before their term is over.

Democracies are good for the unity boost, provided you can fill the quota, meaning that if you find yourself unable to expand you'll find yourself unable to fill said quotas, especially if they pertain to additional mining or research stations. Also, democratic rulers are always drawn from your existing pool of leaders, meaning that you will lose a leader and have to hire another one until you can get them back, especially if the RNG decides to elect the other guy even after you spent ungodly amounts of influence to bend the numbers in their favor.

Democracis are bad; mandates don't feel like a waste of resources as they often do not align with your needs. As an example, a mandate might ask you to build food districts when in reality you're in need of minerals or other kind of resources.

Oligarchies and Dictatorships are more reliable because: agendas are more likely to be useful because they provide a guaranteed bonus throughout rulership, they are generally more powerful, and you can pick a ruler from a pool of candidates with 100% chance of success if you need and have influence.

Democracy is always a bad idea, keep those peasants firmly under control or else you might end up with heretics and zenos in your empire! Think of the CHAOS that would cause! Then you'd have to purge, burn and kill....

I never had a problem with being a Democracy. You just have to stay on top of it.

But I want to purge, burn and kill anyways. This just allows for some variety and domestic purging while my truce expires with the foreign purge targets. >_>

i always do dictatorship or monarch and if i am playing with friends and we are doing what i call DnD style. where our empire is driven by the player created story for bet of a background story for the empire and species within the empire. then i go from dictatorship to monarch or opposite direction

Well, I can just agree with everyone while also giving my usual 2 cents of advice to new players: STELLARIS is the game, not just the first or second empire you play through. Do lots of different race types, government ethics/civics, expansion agendas, military/diplomatic strategies, etc... I don't think you can really grasp all the game has to offer if you only do one or two play-throughs, and/or only use one type of empire. And, you can have several different game saves going at once - nothing stopping you from jumping back and forth between different saves.
I mostly play as democracy.

Call me boring but I can't get into playing as a difference race. Just like teh civ series I always play as The United States. To me, democracy in Stellaris is fun because I RP as a passive empire that values life. So I see little fighting unless one of my planets is attacked then I go on a revenge tour, but never attacking civilians.
