How to end assimilation war?

Two declared on me, the only two options for my war goal were humiliation and assimilation. I picked assimilation and now them accepting my demands are -1000.
-950 now that I've conquered all of their planets.. Still no option besides me surrendering or white peace.
I have to wait till all of their population has been purged and they no longer exist in the galaxy, to end the war? Seems kind of extreme.

Status quo in a total war what a war for assimilation is, gives you everything you have taken from your enemies.

You should be gaining ownership of systems as soon as you fully control them. This will kill the empire as soon as you take all their planets which would end the war.

Unless you're pre-2.0 then it works slightly diffently

You must be missing a system.

If you had conquered all of their planets then their empire would be destroyed.

Assimilation wars (and other total wars) end if you capture all of their planets or settle a status quo.

assimilation counts as a "total war" where the goal is complete control of everything they own. they will NEVER surrender to a total war, the only thing you can do is destroy them entirely or accepct what you have already taken

Maybe had a bug then.
Conquered everything, including their capitol in the middle of the blob.
However, it was still red. Said owned by x, but controlled by me after I invaded.
That was the only planet they "owned", so I did the white peace and war ended.
I also owned the star base in that territory.. so after a few "turns" this converted their capitol to my control and they were destroyed, during peace.

might have been a colony that was in development, i've seen weird things happen to those during wars
