What does Total War do?
What does Total War do exactly? What are the benefits of using it? Does it allow me to claim an entire empire as my own?

As soon as you fully occupy a system it's yours.

you don't claim, you just take without waiting for resolution of the war. same goes for your opponent in the war and status quo ending will not return any systems captured by either side regardless of any claims that may or may not exist

So like say if I end in a stalemate, and I have successfully invaded the planets and have the systems under my control, those systems will belong to me?

THIS IS AWESOME! And as long as my Colossus is not destroyed the systems are mine right? Even if the war ends in a stalemate I can still keep the systems? Excellent. Brb using Total War on every enemy now.

Even if you lose the colossus the systems are already yours.
Status quo looks at claims vs occupied systems, since every captured system is instantly OWNED by you, there's nothing for status quo to do other than finish the war "as is".

we may have created a monster, should we tell him about the other ways to get total war casus belli?

THIS IS FANTASTIC! THANK YOU DO MUCH! Screw claims and losing influence, I know what I’m doing tonight! Also, if during a Total War, what if I just kept the Colossus at the safest part of my Empire?(My capital of course). The enemies won’t go for it right? So I essentially can’t, “lose”.

Well you could still lose the war^^, but yea I usually keep my colossus parked way back in a system deeeeeep in my empire and seldom use it.

I don't have apocalypse but I assume after starting the war, it doesn't matter whether you lose the colossus or not, I doubt the war would instantly end because you lose what gave you the option. You'd just have to build a new one for the next war.

Besides, if you actually "lost" a total war it's complete GAME OVER. Like the name implies, a victory or surrender in a TOTAL war is for your complete territory. If you DON'T want the entire territory in that war you have to ask for a status quo once you've gotten however much territory you want.

You do not need to keep the Colossus "alive" to have Total war CB. You don't even need to build it in the first place, as the Colossus and Total war CB are separate traits of the Colossus perk.

Other ways to get a Total war CB:
- being a Fanatic Purifier, Determined Exterminator or Devouring Swarm (total war CB on the whole galaxy)
- wardeccing one of the three above (though it will only apply to said war)
- wardeccing an FE/AE

Now.....go forth, Lord Vad- Evoxrus! Do what must be done! Do not hesitate; show no mercy!

Total war is a great mechanic early for specific civics early and everyone else late game.
