Exotic gases?
So I have been playing around for a bit, but I have yet to encounter the tech that allows me to either make or extract exotic gases. I have already unlocked plenty of buildings that need these gases to upgrade though. Which tree should i pursue to find this tech?

Im in a similar situation, though my issue is I've already had exotics extraction researched, I can build ground bases for these materials, but I cannot build mining stations to get the gases offworld, this issue is stemming across rare crystals and exotic gases aswell.

Cant help feel like my game is bugged or something. Is there some way later unlocked sub-set research for mining stations of rare minerals? I've got a lot of systems that would greatly improve if I could just get those rares...uhg

Just saying: I found Stellaris wiki a great source of information. Although with each update lately it has to go through some of it as well but have a look still.

There is no seperate tech for extracting gasses from space-borne objects. The two kinds of Special Resource techs are Extraction and Refining.

-Extraction is the one that allows you to exploit pre-existing sources of the resource (e.g. Bubbling Swamp rare features on planets allow a certain number of Gas Extraction Well buildings), including space-borne deposits.

-Refining tech unlocks a building which can be constructed anywhere and allows a specialist pop to turn 10 minerals into 2 of the given resource (Exotic Gasses, Rare Crystals, Volitile Motes).

Both techs are the same "tier," meaning that they have the same research cost and start showing up in your "deck" of potential technologies at the same time, all other things being equal. Not sure what the specific weights are for these techs to show up more frequently in the research list, but I'd guess having a scientist with the Indusrty Specialization leading your Engineering Research is probably one of them.

All of these techs are in the Engineering tech tree, along with EVERYTHING ELSE. (darn you, Mega-Engineering! Spawn already!)

In details, these are Tier 2 tech (cost: 4000, weight: 170):

Exotic Gas Refining:
Weight Modifiers (×0.5) One must be true • Any Owned Planet • One must be true • Has deposit Bubbling Swamp • Has deposit Fuming Bog • Any Planet within borders • One must be true • Has deposit +1 • Has deposit +2 • Has deposit +3 • Has deposit +4 • Has deposit +5 (×1.25) Research Leader (Engineering): • Is Materials Expert Research Effects Building: Exotic Gas Refineries

Exotic Gas Extraction:
Weight Modifiers (×1.25) Research Leader (Engineering): • Is Materials Expert (×0.0) All must be false • Any Owned Planet • One must be true • Has deposit Bubbling Swamp • Has deposit Fuming Bog • Any Planet within borders • One must be true • Has deposit +1 • Has deposit +2 • Has deposit +3 • Has deposit +4 • Has deposit +5 Research Effects Reveals Ressource: Exotic Gases Building: Gas Extraction Wells

In practice, this is a low chance low tech to appear in your deck because there are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ton of other techs at the same level with similar weight. It took me 2280 for mine to appear despite the 1.25 pull modifier from leader. You'd better take it when it appears as it should be quite cheap when it does.

That's something to get into a heated but very interesting discussion, I suggest you take a look at and maybe comment yourself:

i dont get why they bloat the Engineering tree so much I mean if I was making the techtree
Motes in Engineering Crystals in Physics and Gases in Society as that's where there they tend to get used plus id make Crystals cost energy and gases food rather then overtap mierals
