Bug: Gateway Tech Never Appears?
As the title says, Gateway Tech never appears for me in any game for at least the last year. I used to get the tech years ago. It came around eventually. But it just NEVER comes up. No matter my civics, ethics, the pathing I take in the tech tree. Even finding an inactive gateway and having it in my empire. I go way late in to the end-game, cycling those same +5% techs over and over, but Gateway Activation just never comes up.

Is it because I have the L-Gate expansion? Is it one of the other? I can play with L-Gates or play with Gateways, but not both?

Is it because I have the Giga-Structural Engineering mod? Does that somehow break Gateway Tech? (I have 3 mods: Giga, No Mega-structure limit, and UI 1080p).

I have pulled up the tech tree and looked at the factors and weights online, and I see no reason for it to never come up. I seem to meet the conditions every game. Once I force Gateway Activation, then Gateway Construction comes up in the tech tree naturally. But why can't Gateway Activation come up naturally?

I'm just getting tired of having to force the tech in the end-game with console commands. It feels cheap and really breaks the roleplay. Anyone who knows the secrets of the gateways, please throw me a bone. Thanks.

Gateway tech requirres you have found any non L-gate for some reason.
if you only have L-gates, it will never drop.

I have found and taken over systems with normal deactivated gateways. The tech still never comes up.

Edit: However, the system I have found with a deactivated gateway also has a partially constructed 'Dynamic Core Igniter', which is a mega-structure from the Giga-Structural mod. So that entire system is likely an add-on from the mod, not included in the base-game. Thus maybe THAT gateway 'doesnt count' in the eyes of the game looking to see if I have 'found a gateway'.

It should probably still count. And no, it isn't related to having distant stars, you can have both.

you need hyperdrive 3 and have encountered a gateway or l-gate or know an empire that has gateway activation. your changes also go way down if your scientist doesn't have particles/curator/maniacal/genius. having a gateway or l-gate in your borders, tech ascendancy perk, discovery tradition or particles trait on your scientist will boost your chances.

also make sure you just aren't missing it due to having too many options, when you can select your techs you can scroll down if there's a bunch of them

Here's a good site for your reference: https://turanar.github.io/stellaris-tech-tree/vanilla/

All of the weights are shown there.

Ok. So the answer is no one knows why the Gateway tech isn't appearing. Looks like it is a me-specific problem that no one else is experiencing.
I can tell you with absolute certainty that the more you want a technology to appear, the less likely you are to see it surface.

I feel like people are reading the problem incorrectly. It's not that this one tech is coming up rarely or very late in the game. It NEVER comes up. In my last 20 games, played until I am cycling all the end-game repeating techs for the 20th time, while owning the entire galaxy, Gateway Activation comes up ZERO times. Ever. According to all of the resources available, I absolutely meet every criteria for the tech to appear, but it never comes up. Clearly there is a bug, but it seems it is either a rare case or a unique case. My best guess is that the weight of Gateway Activation is somehow set to zero in my game files.

Like KanmanDS, I have experimented with several different starts and starting settings (including running max gateway frequency). I haven't seen it turn up since 3.0 was released. I usually run Gigastructural Engineering, but I have also two full rounds of the base base game (running all the DLC) and nothing.

I think this needs a bug-fix.
