About gateways: I can't remember if you get the same opinion penalty with gateways, but trade routes use gateways and wormholes so maybe.
In regards of gateways I'm 99% sure that it counts as bordering them, at least for influence cost of claims, since the L-gateway works that way (if you own the initial gate system in the L-cluster at least)
Example: I couldn't place a dyson sphere after removing whatever was on the central star.
In general, the guidance for placing a megastructure is pretty much ZERO. You click the button and hope that you're in a system that can have that megastructure in it. If it can't then you have to keep looking around. Why the megastructure doesn't just remove the mining station, who the ♥♥♥♥ knows? Why systems that can have the requested megastructure aren't highlighted in the galaxy view, dunno. Why you can't click on the star and say 'build dyson sphere'. Construction ships add almost zero the the gameplay.
Anyway, there are rules many of which are outdated on the internet about where different structures can go. The minerals one needs to go on a black hole, i haven't been able to build the unity one, who knows where the ♥♥♥♥ that goes. Gateways need to be built outside the system center (how are you supposed to know that? Magic.)
