Work for Idle Construction Ships?
As the game goes on I often wind up with a Science vessel or three that have nothing to do so I have them boost Research on the Research-heavy planets.

What about Construction ships? Is there anything useful for them to do if they're going to be idle for a while?

Not particularly.
Some folks will keep a few parked at starbases parked around different points of their empire.
Some will just scrap them when they go unsed fro awhile and build new ones as needed.

I tend to have a couple in reserve for the occasional building that I need but the rest I get rid of once most the jobs done.

would be nice if you could use one to boost the output of a mineing station or to boost planet build speed

if your at the point where everything is constructed why not go around and make battle stations

I use them to spy on other empires. as long as you have open borders you can spy on them without having to trade for sensor links. even if an empire has their borders closed you can send a construction ship to the edge to spy.

Oh that's a good idea.

unmanned sci ships are better for that job. they have better stats to avoid death, and also subspace navaigation etc
sometimes ill have them follow other empires fleets to see what their up to

Agreed with OP. The research uplink thing is mostly an afterthought, I think, casually bumped from an advanced Tradition during the immense 2.2 revamp.

I stick all the extra science ships into planetary orbit for research buffs. Idle construction ships don't do anything. Parking them near empire borders as "lazy scouts" makes them at least do something.

Yeah, it would make sense for there to be something for construction ships to do later in the game... I think they should be required for upgrading starbases, actually. Or maybe provide a 2x speed boost to the upgrade time and module building time.

Not true, the uplink was around since 1.0, just super rarely used.

This is exactly what I was thinking as well. Park one at a mining station and get a 10% boost or whatever.

Glad to know I didn't miss anything though. Thanks gang.
