2) There are civics that increase influence gain, winning wars of humiliation gives 100 and try to please as many factions as much as possible. Also make sure you're not spending any on any ongoing diplomacy. If you have the energy, have the artist troupe deal on, sometimes they will send a "newsletter" that lets you exchange some energy for influence, although that will stop at some point.
