YouTuber War: How to observer + control NPCs?
If you've been watching the YouTuber War series, you'll have seen that ASpec has GameMaster style abilities. In the first season he was able to trigger the Scourge to happen and in the current series he has directly controlled the Ether Drake and an Awakened Empire.

So is it possible to set up a game like that? Where one player is an observer/GM and can make life a little more interesting for other players?

You just pick a faction and then use console to observe and let the empire you picked be controled by the AI. As for activating console, should be available right away I assume, at least for host.

Using console. You can use play X to take control of any faction including enclaves, leviathans, etc.

Well yes, I know about using the console in single player. Is there a complicated option to start a multiplayer game as a GM style observer? I've only played a couple of games and didn't look too deeply into the options.

So the console is readily available in multiplayer? Or is it only the option to become an observer?

Though that would explain why the YouTuber War always has one AI empire. That would likely be the one ASpec starts with to become an observer.

I'd assume the host can use it anytime at least.
to my knowledge (I usually host games) console is not available in multiplayer and ironman mode

Iron-man mode disables console. But multiplayer shouldn't, as we can see from the YouTube series.
Try hosting your own game and pulling it up

You said you host multiplayer WITH iron-man?
no just hosting in general ... you cant host with ironman active. I just saying it is similar to ironman mode.

I guess I'll check for myself when I get back home then.

I see the problem, I can open the console in a multiplayer game but no command will go through.

Im not sure if there is a way to get the console working in multiplayer but its easy to edit the save file and just set up a player as whatever empire, including leviathans.

So unless they used some dev hax to get the console to work in multiplayer they probably had a specific player/computer that was just set to play as the Ether Drake in order to move it around and another normal observer to watch everything else.

It has to be more than that, because he manually triggered the Prethoryn crisis in the first series (which would imply free console use).

I havent watched the video/s so I dont know the details and I have never made my own events but just quickly looking for information the wiki for event modding has this as an example for how to use MTTH(Mean Time To Happen.. a timer on events):

country_event = { id = crisis.2000 days = 200 random = 100 }

crisis.2000 is supposed to be the Contingency so loading a multiplayer game as singleplayer and putting that in the console and saving the game, would mean that 200-300 days after they load the save in multiplayer the Contingency event would start.

If they play everything in a long session this is obviously -not- how they did it but if they do save and load the game they either have the dev hax to activate the console in multiplayer or its just some save game magic like the above.
