clustered players attempts to have the players close together. distributed tries to have them spread evenly apart

Quite self-explanatory man.
Clustered positioning will try to place player and empires into clusters with 2-3 systems between them on start.
Random is random.

Is it just clustering players or does it cluster AI empires near you as well? I like the idea of starting close to my coop partner but we don't want to start close to AI empires...

It's entirely empire based, not player based. Neither setting will guarantee you to be close to another human player.

theres not much you can do to control whether you are close to an AI empire, but clustered players will put you close to the other players

there is a setting for empires in general, and a different setting for players
