well, on smaller maps if you increase habitable planets like 5x, ecoínomy will be stronger and each new star much more productive so that there is much to fight over and habitats/ringworlds having a lesser impact. I havent tried this, but what I know is that I dont like large maps. 600 star systems is quite big already. Stronger economy in smaller space should also mean that endgame crises should be much easier to deal with.

Even 2x tend to generate notable amount of systems with 2-3 habitable planets. It's a bit too much for me (pure IMHO and it's too fantastic even for space opera).

What will happen on 5x I don't even want to imagine :)

Hell, I turn the thing all the way down, and there are STILL a ridiculous number of them all over the place...

I would think that maybe it was the game being confused by the fact that I also have primitives all the way up, but most of them don’t have any on them... Which itself is kind of weird considering.

But isnt 1000 stars a baby punching game once you are dominating ?
Not in my experience. I am currently in a game at war with a large federation. The federation fleet is almost 500k in power that is followed around by 10-12 smaller fleets. Total fleet size is over 1M. I did have a tech lead for a while but due to all the arbitrary war mechanics, they are catching up.

One or two battles results in instant war exhaustion/status quo then a forced 10 year truce. Since it's just me versus them now, I am in a truce with the whole galaxy. So I sit there for 10 years while all 5 empires they rebuild their fleets to >1M fleet power. Then we do the whole thing again.

It's virtually a stalemate. I can usually net several systems out of it but it's quite dull and a very poor war system in my opinion. Not at all what I was looking for in a strategy game.

1000 stars is definitely not a punching back when you have to deal with a 3 million contingency hub fleet at year 2400.

800 star maps is my general preference.

I find that on 1000+ (mods) that you never get to interact like AI across the map till way later in the game.

Time to move on beta patch ;)

Always play small maps. The smaller the map, the bigger you are. Literally.

Modded size laaarge. More comple and if I'm fighting for a galaxy it better be a large one.

Huge, with as many ai empires, primitives, fallen empires and marauders as I can pack into it.

The larger maps become a slog due to fleet caps being 1000. My game I'm playing a xenophobic empire going for conquest and the majority of whats left of the galaxy has federated against me. Their federation fleet is larger than any single fleet I have plus all their normal fleets make it impossible to win a war against them due to the excessive cost penalty for going past the 1000 cap.

I had this problem too. The federation blob was over 1.1M (the largest single fleet almost 500k). I had several encounters trying to chip away at it using all battleships (5 fleets, 25 battleships per fleet).

But that was tedious and slow due to forced 10 year truces. I finally beat it down after re-fitting my battleships to the tachyon lance/neutron launcher/kinetic artillery build.
