Conformist trait for conquered species??? good or useless
I have genetic engineering and can give the conformist trait to the conquered race (whose ethics are different than mine) is this a good idea or is it useless

Depends on their ethics. Typically a good choice for ethics that run against yours, but it's much more effective against Xenophobes/Spiritualists. Xenophobic factions are the worst of the lot, since they hate almost everything involving other empires and Spiritualists get mad if you aren't a spiritualist empire and have robots/synths, meaning if the faction crops up late game, it almost immediately gets a severe penalty (which is very extreme). Both those factions can be extremely crippling for empires who don't share their values.

I remember a game where I conquered a whole slew of Fanatic Purifier planets and had to systematically stamp out their Xenophobic lean, that was one hell of an investment.

Yeah, cause the only other option is displacement (or purge for certain empire types), which carries its own penalties (especially for Xenophile/Egalitarian Empires).

It'll take a while, but it's the most worthwhile method, and you can alter their template after they've sufficiently changed their tune.
