Can ships use gateways after losing the system?
As above: If an empire owns two systems with active gateways, and one system gets captured during a war (not permanently taken, flipped through combat while the war is still going).
Can they still use that gateway to jump to and from that system?

The conditions for using a gateway:

It's in a system you have access to. Gateways in a system with closed borders are not usable. If an active gateway somehow ends up in a neutral system, you can use it.

The owner of the system is not at war with you. Obviously the advantage of gateways would be gone if your enemy could simply sneak in through them.

Otherwise, you can move between any two active gateways.

Thanks for answering!

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough: I meant can the owner of the gateways still use them if an enemy has captured the station of the system it's in. If they cannot, it would be a valid strategy to rush a gateway system to deny it to the defender and their allies.

I'm mainly asking this because I often end up bordering states who are hostile to me, and allies with other states far away. If I can knock out their gateways (and they lack convenient wormholes) I could use that to cut them off, or at least force their allies to take the long way around.

In that case, no they cannot use it.

Being at war (or closed borders) with the owner prevents you using the gateway.

Yes, but that doesn't apply here since you own the gateway. You just temporarily lost control of the system.

Oh that. I don't know for sure. I'd assume not, since they have control of the system and it's mining stations, thus likely also any megastructures.

Well, that's the confusing part. When a system changes hands, the gateways are still coloured as if they were owned by the defender (which they technically are I guess).

But i'm not sure if that means it can still be used, or if that's just to prevent the attacker from using it.

Just tested it, apparently you can still use the gateways.

The empire that the Gateway belongs to can use it, no matter who actually keeps the system occupied. I Did capture a system with a gateway from an enemy federation (wanting that gateway was the main reason for the war), I moved on, thought my front was secure and then a fleet jumped through the gate behind my front. Two fleets more later on, but by that time I had left two of my five fleets as guards there and killed those attackers off.
Something I hope they change / fix
