Edit: I was offered a choice to destroy it or study, hmm decisions..decisions.
Somewhat eerie really to have it suddenly appear and orbit a primitive civilisation I'm observing.... half expecting obsidian-like obelisks to appear about the place and for this primative civilisation to start developing unstable AI. :)

it has since appeared in a new area and is now hovering over another planet
I attacked it when it was hovering over the pre-space faring civilisation I was observing, the craft just insta-jumps (Vanishes) regardless to where in the system it is the moment you confirm to attack a neutral target and the first of your ships fires a shot.
Though in typical 'Paradox logic' simply discovering the thing doesn't trigger the decision to study it or attack it. It has to actually visit one of your colonies for the game to even acknowledge you have encountered it and pose the options.
Perhaps if you only attack it after triggering the scripted prompt and clicking to attack it, it sticks around when under fire.
google then brought me here, and i made a science ship follow it so i could track it in case it was heading somewhere else than to me
it stopped at one of my habitats and procced the event.
basicly: science team wants to study it and military wants to destroy it.
playing as fanatic materialist, i figured i might as well study it... you know, for science and stuff!
.
.
doing so added the "unexpected guest" with the text "a mysterious alien entity has entered orbit of Duracchus C I Habitat. It would be wise to determine its purpose here as soon as possible."
costs only 200 engineering research, so its instantly done.
i can imagine that like so many other events, there's more than one outcome, but what i got was:
"despite extensive research the enigmatic cache and its origin are still shrouded in mystery. Though it is definitely not organic in nature, it is not entirely machine either. it appears to be preoccupied mainly with the gathering, storing and encoding of data
its surface is covered in hundreds of thousands of minuscule scratches and dents in which we have discovered traces of a compound that is alien to our galaxy."
one option was given: intriguing (250 engineering research gained)
edit: shortly after this, i got another popup with an Lgate insight. but it was identical to one i got earlier that game from the event with Xvan labs. might be a bug that has nothing to do with this event, but the timing was curious
currently about a year later, and its still just hovering over the same habitat. im considering attacking it - just to see what happens
a couple of years later, and this message popped up (and just as i was getting my fleet ready to attack it):
"It appears as though the enigmatic cache is now done with its scan of Duracchus C I habitat and is seeking another target planet within our borders"
options:
a relief for the citizens of duracchus C I Habitat
A shame
neither has any effect
will update this post with what happens next...
edit1: its now hovering over the habitat right next to the last one. no event popup so far
edit2: it moved to another planet (not a habitat this time - but still the same system) without giving any notifications or popups. i still have a science ship following it, so i can keep track of it.
edit3: another jump to another planet in the same system without any popup
wow, didnt even notice that buff XD thanks!
its surface is covered in hundreds of thousands of minuscule scratches and dents in which we have discovered traces of a compound that is alien to our galaxy."
In my game it has appeared in a very sensitive chokepoint between my empire and two hostile neighbours, one of which is a devouring swarm with which I'm preparing a border war to push the border back to a black hole and open up an arm of the galaxy full of resources. The chokepoint is also home to a colony and a deposit of living metal, so *very* sensitive. It has a space station armed to the gills and my fleet is there too.
The alien cylinder now hovering over my colony and giving me the (very welcome) research bonus, but I don't quite trust it and this is definitely a complication I did not need right now. xD I hope it doesn't go berserk. My first thought when the event popped up was Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. I was convinced it would start draining my oceans and I was going to have to send a science ship back in time to find some large cetacean-like creatures from my colony's past, but that hasn't happened... so far. xD
Anyway my border war is unavoidable, so I hope the thing remains neutral...
