Explore vs survey

What is the difference when i order a science ship to either explore or survey an unkniown system and which one should I choose ?

Explore just sends the science ship into the system so that military ships can travel to it.

Survey surveys the star, the planets and moons and is required if you want to build an outpost in that system.

right off the start i explore only so i can quickly find the planets that spawn near me. then when i know which way i should expand i survey. after the coming changes it sounds like a science ship dedicated to exploration will be a good idea

Also after researching the first 1-2 upgraded sensor techs, everything within at least 1 hyperlane is explored at range.

Though i don't know why the "explore this system" button is even there, since sending the ship with a "move" command per right-click has the same effect.
