Impossible war to win
I fought a war to vassalise a neighbour this evening and despite taking every single system and planet in their entire empire, they won't surrender. They have a defensive pact with an empire on the other side of the galaxy that can't get to me, and I can't get to them. I can't open borders with my allies because the whole point in the game I'm playing is that I'm controlling a bunch of enslaving fascist maniacs.

Surely if I've completely dominated the empire I'm trying to vassalise it shouldn't matter that they have an ally? It's driving me f***ing mad.

It's basically wasted 15 years of my mid-game because all I can do now is either declare war on at least two other empires, which are in federations so I'll be declaring war on the rest of the galaxy, or I sue for white peace and end up where I started. Grrrrrr

Thats a problem Stellaris has since it was first released, it lacks the option to make a seperate peace with individual members of an alliance, as well as an option to make peace if you are not the partner in an alliance who started the war / had war declared upon you.

are those enemy fleets the empire you're at war with or some random space aliens? if they're the people you're at war with you can try wiping those out to increase your difference in fleet power score

Yeah, just random aliens that they never bothered to clear out.

I've come to realise that it doesn't really matter that I haven't won yet, because they can't reinforce so I can happily just leave them alone, and I'm getting plenty of resources from all the occupation, so I may as well just carry on as if it's over and finish it off when I can.

I still don't get it, why it's not possible to conclude a separate peace. This is possible in EU IV, another Paradox title, costs you some reputation and may upset your partners, but it is possible there.

i haven't done a vassalization war yet, how does it work with war exhaustion? do you status quo out if you don't win or does it just white peace and reset back to nothing happened?

if the former you could make claims and then once it ends release all the stuff you took as a vassal.

well, each game has it's own team working on it. maybe put it up as a suggestion on the paradox forum for the game

@Meewec They call it a status quo (see the second screenshot) but it just resets back to nothing happened. Otherwise I'd have just gone for that!

There is some murmuring that diplomacy is the next part of the game getting an (long overdue) overhaul, so maybe we can hope that they adress that there.

Actually "Status Quo" means that both sides keep everything the have a claim on AND under military control.
If you actually don't have claims on his systems, ofc that means that you would get nothing.

That would explain why I get nothing, didn't see any need to claim stuff if I was going to just vassalise.

i was just thinking with 900 influence you could just make your own vassal out of his stuff. not a perfect solution to the problem but you'd end up with a vassal

Oh can I claim now and just landgrab?

BRB claiming all the planets

Not sure if it works with the Vasalisation Wargoal, but as long as you arent playing on Ironman, I'd give it a shot.

Oh hey, I just claimed one rubbish tiny system and now it's in the status quo resolution. Excellent, thanks a lot both, you've made this save fun again.

The only penalty in claiming during war is that it costs more influence iirc but other than that, claim away.
