she's American and her real name is Carolyn Janice Cherry.
"C. J. Cherryh" seems to be her pseudonym/pen name.

Can't find the source right now, but I've also read that it is pronounced like the fruit. Apparently, her first editor though "Cherry" sounded too much like the name of an author of romance novels (particularly for a woman when there were few prominent women sci-fi authors).
