How do you build new gateways?
is it a tech? besides the one needed to use them does it require a new tech? if so ive never come across it and its 2447. still no end game crisis either.

Then you will get tech for gate travel/repairing. And later on you will get tech to build gates (like megastructurers first a assembly foundation, then the real deal. Around 10k minerals each I think). All in Physics tree.

Its a rare tech that has the rare gateway activating tech as a prerequisite.

Both are in physics I think. Last time I got it i was already on repeatables.

You do not need to own a system with a gateway to get the tech, though it might increase the chance to get it.

And one gate is 25k Minerals and 10k energy

What do they connect to? Repairing one opens it to another, so what does building just one do?

They form a network so from one gate you can reach every other gate in the universe that is repaired and not in possession of someone who has either closed his borders to you or is at war with you.

Ah, I hadn't realized that. When I click it on the map it takes me to the same other gateway so I assumed they were like wormholes, just built.

Glad I read this thread, I thought I wasted all my time researching gateway repair.

Now that my whole galaxy is visible, I've notice the only 2 gateways in the entire galaxy are literally two systems next to each other in my zone. I've made a very wide empire that controls 1.5 arms of the galaxy, a gateway at the edges would surely help me out in getting my many small fleets around.

I space my gateways out some, but I have been building them in as much of a sweet spot as I can find between shipyards and wormholes to capitalize on the natural jump distance they provide. I just wish I could build, or get the AI to build, them in AI territory if we are in a federation together.

Well its like 2509 now and I have a whole system of gateways. Having them + jump drives makes the pain and YEARS it takes to move after 2.0 compleatly go away.
Emerald Unicorn Mar 3, 2018 @ 10:50pm
I do really like it. It makes it feel like you have achieved something. Getting from one side of the galaxy to the other in just a month vs the early game when it took a month just to move your fleet over 2 systems lol.

Be aware that once you restore or build a gate that it can be invaded from anywhere in the galaxy with another gate.

You sould under all ideal circumstances put it at the end of a so called 1way system, with tons of barriers and fleets protecting your domain from any invader that seeks to use it.
Emerald Unicorn Mar 3, 2018 @ 11:41pm
I was wondering about that. I know I can't use gates/wormholes to empires that have closed borders, but wartime removes border restrictions... I haven't had it happen, yet, but I have usually been safe and always put as fully built of a starbase as I can in the same system and position the gate as well as I can so they will have to go towards the center of the system on their way through to get in range of the starbase as well as outfitting the bases with the attack range +50% module. I figure this should get them to be engaged long enough for me to gate in another fleet if my base isn't strong enough on its own.
Aemon Bane Mar 3, 2018 @ 11:42pm
That is not accurate @Erikon , gateways in your empire can only be used by you and those you have open borders with, if an empire declares war on you they lose access to your gate ways, they have to conquer the system(take control of starbase and any planets) to use the gateway thus they can use it for reinforcements but not invasion.
Emerald Unicorn Mar 4, 2018 @ 12:27am
So if they are occupying a system of yours that has a gateway, do you you then lose access to it when they gain access? Or do they just gain access to it in addition to you? Does this allow you to go back through it into their territory, then?
Palpatine Mar 4, 2018 @ 1:39am
yes if you lose acess to a gateway (enemy occupies the system) YOU can still use it. but the enemy cannot until they take the whole system. I had an awoken empire still using it's gateways even though i was occupying the system. I couldnt use them until compleatly annexing the system. Also if you are at war or have closed your borders then your gateways cannot be used agaisnt you. its wormholes you are thinking of.
