If you dont you can only leave the system through the hyperlane you entered.
That system is to prevent fleets just ignoring the outer systems defenses and going straight into the middle of enemy territory.
Remember that jumping lowers your ships damage and sublight speed by 50% for some ungodly balancing against alpha strikes, I guess. Might get you wiped out if you're not supremely overpowered against the stuff you land on.
It's a really wonk system, but...balance I guess. Otherwise you can just steamroll everything in your path.
And that would make the weariness mechanic pointless now, wouldn't it!
