Another race laid claim to a system I control

I got a notification that another race laid claim to a system i control despite me having a starbase/outpost there. I'm wondering what I should do. Are they going to send a fleet there or declare war on me? Should I send one of my fleets to the system they "laid claim" to?

Claim means that if they declare war and capture the system, they could take it from you at the end of the war (unless you capture it back).

It's possible. Check the diplomacy screen. If they are not inferior to you, and relations are in the red, war is very much possible. It would be a good time to make defence pacts with some other neighbours.

Oh yes you should. In my game i had multiple factions declare war after claiming a dozen systems.
