You say that you've had the first event: does that mean the Subspace Echos event, or the Vanguard Arrives event? Did Prethoryn fleets actually spawn in a rim system, or did you just get the event saying that they are coming?
If you have the "The Coming Storm" event chain in your Situation Log, then you should be able to trigger the event "crisis.12" safely: this one chooses a location for the Prethoryn initial wave and sets the global_flag that allows the first wave to arrive. The actual arrival of the wave has a MTTH (Mean Time To Happen) of 30, so it should happen fairly quickly.
It looks like the Prethoryn events are fairly self-propelled: once the chain starts, the events look like they are set to make it possible for the next event in the chain to fire. So you should just have to kick off the first event manually and the rest of the crisis will play out normally.
However, if you want to jump straight to the Prethoryn arrival, then trigger "crisis.12" and then immediately trigger "crisis.17."
EDIT: If you already had the Vanguard, and want the main body to arrive, then you'll want to trigger "crisis.19".
