Technological enlightenment
I'm playing the default goody-goody federation humans, and my territory happens to include a pre-FTL species I've just been observing for a while. Should I uplift them? Does it pay off?

I'm a bit hesitant, since their system is a threshold between the two main chunks of my territory. So if they decide to close borders, I'll have to fight them.

If you enlighten them, they should turn into a protectorate once the mission completes, which will earn you +0.25 influence per month.

Uplifting is the process of forcing the evolution of a pre-saptient species (one that isn't advanced enough to form a civilization yet) and has it's own rewards. I'd go ahead and enlighten them if you're feeling benevolent.
If those are fungi, keep a fleet nearby :D

And why is that?
They also provide a nice source of immigrants since almost every uplifted species will be friendly enough to sign a migration treaty. As far as military goes, they're useless.

Should I spoiler? ^^ I don't know the name but if you get the job to track down a paradise planet... there'll be a primitive civ in it. However, not everyone likes them and it spawns a fleet almost immediatly after dialogue. Was a 5k one in one of my games. Don't remember tho if it was a gaia planet or not. Save/Load or google may provide answers to that.

The enlighted nation will get quite random stuff, and the process cost some energy, and bio research each month. It only worths if they are already advanced enough. It doesn't really matter what ethos they get, because they will be protectorate, then vassal. From vassal you can invite them into federation, if their ethos are good, or integrate them, if not.

Was kinda hillarious when i did with some folks pre 2.0, and they became fanatic purifiers.

When you enlighten a primitive colony, they become a protectorate, in this state they provide you with a minor influence boost. I find that if their technology level was Industrial or higher, they have a good chance of catching you up in technology to the point that they will upgrade their status to Vassal. You lose the influence bonus, but gain a potential ally against your enemies, as long as they remain loyal to you.

However I find it in every game, that once my research level has really taken off, these primitives regardless of their tech level, never catch you and never become more than a influence generator.

By catch, I mean they learn sufficient enough research to become a Vassal.
