Chemical Bliss: Pop Assimilation Tool?
Is the purpose of the "Chemical Bliss" social welfare policy to speed up assimilation of pops with hostile belief systems? Is it worth the 40% production penalty?

The description made me laugh, so there's that ...

Somewhat, yeah. Factions (or just ethics before that) used to play larger role in pop happiness, while happiness used to play larger role in production output; living standards hardly changed since then.

Obviously not. Plenty of ways to deal with unruly pops, giving them 1CG is hardly the best one.

I never even resarch chemical bliss, it seems utterly useless to me. Like any pop that could benefit from the extra happiness (slaves, underpaid workers etc.) get their production output destroyed which is conter intuitive. I imagine it *might* be useful for rogue servitors because bio trophies only produce ~2 unity, so even if it rounds down you'll still get 1 unity per pop which is about the same as a hunter killer job only its much easier to get more bio trophy jobs than the former. But then again their happiness already is at 100% or 90 something and I don't remember a way for this to go degrade so any potential benefit is again counter-intuitive overall.

They pretty much use their version with no downsides (trophies don't really work anyway), and it's the only standard they can use for organics.

It seems utterly useless to me too so I usually research it in late game to reroll my Society techs when I don't see anything I want to immediately research but the game offers Chemical Bliss as one of the options. That way I get at least a little use out of the research points spent on it.

It could be useful when you Total War an entire civilisation and don't want revolts. You can have an ongoing Nerve Staple if you're a Geneticist and then just wait the ten years out.

In my experience it's worthless. I would put that into a decision panel. That would work nicely on newly conquered planets, or while you do something nasty to them. Literary the only possible use, if you conquer an entire nation.

afaik you could before 2.2 back then a specied that got neutered didnt stop working too. Basically you could take over a world and put people in a happy comatose state while they lived out their lives into exstinction, while your own pops slowly filled the areas the dwindling number of the neutered species left unoccupied.

Its one of the changes I actually really dislike, mean I can see why pops that get purged by firing squads after being herded into concentration camps wont work, but neutering is a way of purging that could actually be accepted by a huge number of that population. Being given the choice between having the rest of your life in peace vs being dragged off to a prison and executed.

Now neutering just means it takes longer and gives no diplo malus.

And I actually liked playing a "benevolent" xenophobe empire. Officially stating that ofc those lesser lifeforms need to be removed to free those worlds for the enlightened main species but there isnt any reason for needless cruelty and violence, we aren't barbarians after all and since the fact that our race is DESTINED to rule the galaxy there is no need to rush, let the poor benighted beings live out their remaining lifes after all gracious mercy is the sign of the real and noble ruler.
