Anyone Bother With Nebula Refineries?
They cost 2 energy upkeep for a mere 6 minerals... Seems like kind of a rip off. They wont even get the bonuses from mining research upgrades that the mining station that only cost 1 energy upkeep get. Nor worker bonuses. If it were only 1 energy upkeep I could see it be worth having.

yes, using them on anchorage-bases, since they only NEED the building to boost anchorages I got 2 free slots, priority for that is:

Build in enclave system: use enclave-specific building + hydroponics
Build in black hole system: use black hole observatory + hydroponics
Build in nebula system: use nebula refinery + hydroponics
Build elsewhere: use hydroponics + silos

Its not a great profit, but since 6 minerals usually sell for more then those 2 energy upkeep the thing costs, its still income, same goes for those 3 food the hydroponics generate for 1 energy.

You realize that 1 miner (~6 minerals output) is not somehting you get for free? It eats up 0.5 energy (district upkeep), 1 food (which, in turn, is another 0.2 pop with its 0.2 food + 0.02CG upkeep, and 0.1 district that needs 0.05 energy), then there's CG and amenity production... you can do the math, if you want, but, I think, it ends up about even, when it comes to costs (except for gestalts or slavery); only you don't need pops or infratsructure. And that's not even touching effect on empire sprawl and opportunity costs for all those slots >.>

Either way, there's little else to fill anchorages with.

Besides the previous poster's comment, something else to consider:

Nebula refineries also give you exotic gases (if you've got the extraction tech for Exotic Gases).

My usage ... If I have a free slot why not, other than that I dont bother.

I build starbases for anchorages.

I actively look around for nebulas. Just so I can build starbases there.

The extra minerals is good (I also thought they got higher income with techs that boost starbase outcome. I know that hydrophonics get boosted.)

But the main reason is the easy access to exotic gas.

Also black hole system, are prioritized, since the observatory gives you dark matter with the corresponding tech.

Edit:
Nebula Refinery gives plus 10 minerals, upkeep is 2 energy.
Upkeep is reduced by 20% with galactic ambition (tradition.)

Tech like geothermal fracking and deep core mining, each adds 20% to mineral output.

(And just now saw date of first post.)

They didn't when the post was posted (29 Jun, 2019). You necro'ed a rather old post.

Unless i'm mistaken they now give 10 minerals, are effected by research that increase mineral input and give exotic gasses if you have the tech.

So they have been improved considerably since then.

And they buffed hydroponics since this topic was started, among other things. Seems they agreed.
