Is there any point in destroying the Dessanu?
I just opened an L-Gate and got the Dessanu giving me gifts. I surveyed all their systems (Except for the one they say not to enter) and they unfortunately don't have any of the nanites strategic resource (They might have some in the closed system but I never get to see it)

Is there any point/rewards in invading the Dessanu?

Being the ruler of the L-Gate and inhabiting it is the most strategically important position in the galaxy. There's one way in and many ways out. Everyone who tries to attack you will have to come directly at all your stations/fleets right at the entrance L-Gate on your side, meanwhile you can warp out from your gate to any other in the galaxy, reigning terror or enforcing your will on the galaxy as you please.

Only issue of course is there's rarely any need for doing this as enemies just don't really provide the challenge to make it worth it, not to mention there's still the issue of your old empire in the normal galaxy to deal with sitting around out there being the bulk of your power unless you resettle everyone.

Purging xenos is its own reward.

Yeah, but is it really worth it?

Just have regular jumpgates dotted around your old empire.
And one right next to the L-gate in the L-cluster.
That way you can easily defend your old territory along with the L-cluster ^^

That does kinda throw out the one way in and out policy, though. People can't just jump drive into an L-gate, but they can jump drive right past any defenses in the normal galaxy. Still its better than nothing. Could have all the shipyards and alloy production in the L-gate as emergency production so that even if you are losing stuff in your empire you can't ever run out of ships.

One thing which I think most people miss - the L-cluster contains an absolutely massive number of easily terraformable planets. At a very low-cost, you'll be the owner of around 20 new planets if you occupy it. It's also the only source of nanites.
