Do we not choose FTL anymore?
I haven't played in ages but I remember being able to choose warp, wormhole, or hyperspace.

Just created a new race and they never asked me which one I wanted.

Is that gone?

That hasn't been a thing since 2.0.
it's all hyperlanes now.

Yeah, it's only hyperlanes. They did it so there are actual routes you could block, build defences and so on.

You still can research the lategame ftl methods trough.

Also, there are now gateways that function like those from from mass effect .. if you have the right dlc.

Wormhole stations and Warp drives are gone.
Since Feb 2018

I miss them... It should be optional.

Jump drive still around, plus gateways, l-gates, a different kind of wormhole, but yeah, the other old ftl methods are gone.

Gateway is a late-game tech unlike the original wormhole FTL which was available at day one.

PSI and regular Jump Drive is also yet again a late-game tech with a huge movement/damage debuff unlike the original.

Hyperlane FTL is the only one that does the same thing.

L-gate I presume? Didn't exist back then.

I am afraid that for some reason or another Stellaris Dev team doesn't want to go back to the original fun asymmetrical warfare that had more strategy depth.

There was a big stink about it back then at announced of 2.0 patch and all that. I will let you find out more about that on your own and I do not recommend it. I should know I was there pointing out that I didn't buy into Stellaris for a plain boring hyperlane 4X game. Even Endless Space 2 did the FTL way better by giving more choice way earlier (one of the faction can unlock off-hyperlane travel by turn 6 or something nutty).

Lot of players left and don't let anyone else fool you. The player perk for Stellaris is sorta of static with perk and falloff that typically follows an expansion/patch. The sad part is there are people out there who will be in full denial mode so beware.

TD;LR: There was a huge community disagreement over 2.0 patch a long time ago and hasn't been mended since then.

The only FTL option that if officially gone is warp, which can be simulated with increased hyperlane density as a starting option in your new game settings.

Wormholes are now called Gateways with slightly different mechanics.
Jump drives are still in but have slightly different mechanics.

Instead of starting options they are locked behind tech.

From what I understand FTL and Wormhole was more than the AI could handle well. They were fun options for the player but the AI never really took advantage of either of them very well and so it was really easy to out maneuver them.

Also wars ended up having no depth when playing with warp. It was just bouncing all over the place. Not even like island hopping. It was just shallow gameplay so everyone for MP/Coop would go hyperlanes.

I was unclear, i was trying to just list the remaining forms of FTL travel, since someone above said "only hyperlanes"

By "slightly different" you actually mean "not remotely the same", gateways are just longer hyperlanes that require an advanced tech to use. The only thing they have in common with wormholes is needing an installation to use. Also, increased hyperlane density is not remotely the same as warp past the first (maybe, likely less) 30 years or so until you would previously have increased the range you could jump.

Keep trying to spread those stories and defend the devs from the statement that they removed 2/3 of the starting FTL options, I'm sure they appreciate their white knight

Pretty sure they can't since the underlying code was ripped out.

I just spread the facts pal.
It’s up to you to distort them at your leisure
