Archaeology mishap, Help?
Finally got the baol after a bunch of restarts, super excited and get to third planet, but oh no an enemy empire excavated it before me. Am I just stuck now or is there a way for me to continue the precursor event??

Precursor has nothing to do with archaeology. It's a seperate list of events you can do from your logbook (default F2).

Easiest way to check if you have done an event showing up in your logbook - other than opening it - is to select a science ship - with a scientist commanding it - and search the map for an orange exclamation mark symbol, looking like this [ ! ] (yes, including the brackets).
Bring a science ship near that symbol by entering the system, r-click at it to bring up the sub-menu and choose the "research special project" (without brackets) option. After that the ship will fly to that system or space object and conduct the project.

When using the logbook to get there, keep in mind you need to select the science ship (yes, with a commanding scientist) afterwards to get the menu popping up and being able to conduct the research.

Ocassionally you will encounter special projects requireing a construction ship. The method is the same for those. Well, except you don't need to have a constructor commanding that ship. ;-)

And another thing, planets that are outside an empire's border can't be excavated. So unless your 3rd planet was within the border of an alien empire, you can excavate it the moment you are able to expand your empire over that system.

The enemy empire excavated the baol planet archaeology thing before i could get to it. the log book as well as the orange exclamation point bring me to the already excavated portion of the event; I cant seem to figure out how to continue

The Baol precursor chain was added with the Ancient Relics DLC and is handled as a series of archaeology digs instead of using the old system of researching precursor anomalies.

You won't be able to continue. To get the reward you have to be the one to research all three of the linked dig sites. (The first two to reveal the third, and then the third to get the reward. It is possible that the empire that researched the third dig before you may have gotten your reward. I'm not sure about that.)

I would really like to see a change such that newly discovered event systems (such as precursor homeworlds or the system associated with the rubricator) always spawn linked to a system you control, and new archaeology sites in a precursor chain always appear either in territory you control or in uncontrolled territory that is closer to your territory than to any other empire's territory. As it stands now, you might have to go to war to avoid getting shut out of your reward, which isn't necessarily a game flaw but can be very inconvenient.

its an event chain, im fine with another empire being able to get that event chain and steal it from you but they shouldnt be able to skip to the last step just because you unlocked it and steal it away from you lol

Unfortunately, that's a feature of archaeology sites themselves. For any site with various stages and then a reward on the last step it is possible to finish all the research steps (but not the reward step) and then lose control of the system, and have the new owner jump in and complete the last step for the reward.

Perhaps it would be better if progress on unfinished sites was separate for each player, and if archaeology sites in a chain were only visible to players who had completed the previous dig sites. This would mean that you could still lose out on a reward, but the other empire would have to put in the full time and effort to steal it from you.

This isn't how it's meant to work, incidentally. If you start a dig, it's meant to be made invisible to the AI empires so they don't go digging them up before you can get there. It was mentioned as being bugged in a recent post by Paradox.
