Easiest way to check if you have done an event showing up in your logbook - other than opening it - is to select a science ship - with a scientist commanding it - and search the map for an orange exclamation mark symbol, looking like this [ ! ] (yes, including the brackets).
Bring a science ship near that symbol by entering the system, r-click at it to bring up the sub-menu and choose the "research special project" (without brackets) option. After that the ship will fly to that system or space object and conduct the project.
When using the logbook to get there, keep in mind you need to select the science ship (yes, with a commanding scientist) afterwards to get the menu popping up and being able to conduct the research.
Ocassionally you will encounter special projects requireing a construction ship. The method is the same for those. Well, except you don't need to have a constructor commanding that ship. ;-)
And another thing, planets that are outside an empire's border can't be excavated. So unless your 3rd planet was within the border of an alien empire, you can excavate it the moment you are able to expand your empire over that system.
Thorin :)
You won't be able to continue. To get the reward you have to be the one to research all three of the linked dig sites. (The first two to reveal the third, and then the third to get the reward. It is possible that the empire that researched the third dig before you may have gotten your reward. I'm not sure about that.)
Perhaps it would be better if progress on unfinished sites was separate for each player, and if archaeology sites in a chain were only visible to players who had completed the previous dig sites. This would mean that you could still lose out on a reward, but the other empire would have to put in the full time and effort to steal it from you.
