2- you have not scouted with a science vessel yet
or
3- the guy on the other side closed his borders to you.
Probably one of the 3.
If all those have been done, the option 3 from Mistfox is probably what block you from moving through - the opposite site is inside territory that has closed borders to you.
Keep in mind, that those both has good and bad effects on you. They let you travel far instantly but also enemies. I try to build always citadels/bastions in system with gateway or wormhole if it lead out of my territories and may be invaded from.
Contact with an empire that has them is enough.
Guess its the 3. Option Mistfox mentioned if theres a known empire on the other side of them, check for shut borders.
Other things to mention:
1. Gateways need to be activated before they can be used
2. Wormholes (and yea the Wormhole itself) need to be explored by a science vessel before anything can pass through them, wich is also when they tell you were they lead.
@OP did you do those things?
