Or you press 'M'.

I imagine if you could zoom all the way out from looking at your mighty fleet engaging another mighty fleet, this would be quite taxing on your computer.

It could probably be done without too much of a performance hit, but I would imagine that doing it would involve rewriting so much of the game engine that it really isn't worth it.

Check out Planetary Annihilation: Titans for an example of something similar, though it is an RTS instead of grand strategy.

Stellaris is also RTS, though.

Yeah it is an RTS in that it is a strategy game that you play in real time, but I whether or not it fits into the more narrowly defined RTS genre is probably an open question.

They tested this in early alpha and decided that it did not work very well.

Following a hunch, I was let here via the search engine.

Can someone please confirm that there's a zoom-in/zoom-out button on the map by now?

To explain: I bought this game when it came out, but couldn't zoom reliably because I played on a notebook with a touchpad, but no mouse/mouse wheel. (There's actually a method to zoom with just a touchpad, but it was way too sensitive - you always zoomed in or out fully. Sensibility could not be changed in the options.)

I asked for a zoom-button on the map or keyboard (like in the EU games) on the official Paradox forum back then, but was told to buy a mouse instead. That's why I uninstalled the game when 1.3 still didn't provide keyboard/on-map zoom functions.

(Why did I refuse to use a mouse? Well, I just like playing my strategy games with my notebook lazily reclining on a couch or even in bed - and there's just no surface for an external mouse then.)

Dude...It's called a hard back book. Or a mouse pad. Get one. I have a laptop and use a mouse with it on a bed or couch all the time. No issues. Adapt and overcome and get a mouse.
If you have some basic knowlege of programming concepts and a willingness to do a little research you can use a program called AutoHotkey to create a script that will allow you to assign keypresses to function like scrolling the mouse wheel. Then you won't need a mouse or the dexterity of one to zoom the game in and out.

Why Paradox doesn't have the ability to remap controls as part of the game itself is unclear... that should have been a day one feature if you ask me.
