Lost the 15th time. I'm really getting depressed.
Despite all the tutorials and guides I could find, despite all the best efforts I can do to match up against AI empires (NOT fallen or Advanced Empires), I keep failing on the easiest difficulty, like I'm not supposed to win.

The AI will ALWAYS have further progress no matter what, even with Ironman mode off. This game is beyond depressing to play. It's not a great experience at all.

"Lost" as in how? You got completely annexed and lost all your worlds?

Yes, and losing my fleet on a defensive war without firing the first bullet.
lol I'm getting wrecked too, but I'm slowly learning as to why. My latest play through it because I expanded too fast. Ignored the research stations for too long. Didn't research better weapons tech when I had the chance and still had corvettes when other had cruisers and destroyers with level 2 weapons on them... rip.

Start a new game.

Turn off all advanced AI
Turn off Fallen Empires
Reduce the number of starting AI in the game by 2-3
Create a med. map

Take the ethics of Xenophile and F.materialistic
Traits choose Charismatic and industrious.

This is the easiest set up to learn the game and its mechanics.

Give it a shot and come back with specific questions that you need answered.

Good luck.:)
One thing I learnt from playing with the AI is that you NEED to have allies, period. (Unless you are a veteran player)

I absolutely wrecked nearly every empire (except for the hive minds) with my two allies, forcing the defeated empires to become tributaries, making me the strongest empire.

Look i know the game is hard....but impossible ...no, it took me about 25 rolls to completly win a ironman mode.....partly because of mistakes i made in the set-up

1. ok biggest complaint i hear....the game cheats, if you really believe that just cheat back....fair is fair right?
~ minerals x and ~ cash x on the very start will quarantee you wipe out your closest comptitor

2. dont want to cheat...ok admirable.....are you aware there are literaly 100's of different race combinations anfd starting universe combinations, by constantly tweeking these combos, you can surely make the situation more likely for your victory, i can....take the time to learn these, dont just default everything and whine when you lose

3. ironman mode....i wont lie this is difficult....imposible no. i ♥♥♥♥ my pants every time the doorbell rings and im playing afraid i forgot to pause and since i cant reload afraid what i will see on the screen. After many hours of playing non-ironman you should be good enough to survive it at the ery least tho

i hate having the braindead AI as my allies, you are better off making them tributaries so you can pay for your own stuff. that or just annex them.

Advise - 1. expand as quickly possible and dont worry to much on fleet power. Your fleet power gonna be crap compared to the others anyways, just get a big ally on your side!
Advise - 2. Between the first 4 -5 empires you meet, work on getting on one of their good sides.(find the most friendly of the haters and work on making friendly relations) (make sure they are close to u). Hopefully before 3 - 4 other empires declare war on you now, you should have an ally and good econemy (for beginning game). When the first war starts, build up the biggest fleet you can muster and join that fleet with your allied fleet(your on the defence, they will attack your fleets). with a combined fleet you should be able to take down their fleets on your own defensive ground. Then cede some of those fools planets!!!! ha! now there is a weak empire u wont have to worry about in the future!!!!
(that was long...)
Advise - 3. After this war, you should have met more powerful empires now, get on one of there good sides. Also work on your economy, this will be great for later game (thats obvious). your tech and fleet is still gonna suck compared to almost all other empires(except for the one u kicked booty!) Since you really expanded like the first 30 - 40 years of the game you should have lots of systems to make the credits and energy! Also a decent amount of planets and population. Wont have to worry about war for awhile now will you??? Once your tech is better and can build a better varitiy of fleet you should be well on your way to surviving the first 200 - 300 years of the game :)
Advise - 4. This was just for the beginning... GL!!! :D

This was part of my first actual playthrough and I was stumbling around at the beginning so the two empires supported me as I got my footing and helped me with my conquests.

Don't worry though, I managed to make them my tributaries as well (after defeating the awakened empire)

I'm seeing this type of post a lot lately. If you're following guides and not getting better after failures then maybe the game isn't the one for you.
